W-series shipping thread - 2014 edition

2014-01-17, 0:04 AM

Post your shipping and order management experiences here:

Here are some common points of frequent discussion:

  • How to get a system fast: Buy an in-stock standard configuration from Lenovo or a Lenovo Partner in your area. Customized systems take longer.
  • Avoid Credit Holds - ensure that BOTH your bill to and ship to addresses are listed with your CC bank before ordering
  • Lenovo will NOT bill your card until order ships - an authorization charge hold to check for available balance may show up when order is first placed.
  • Estimated ship dates are based on default lead time and can vary from what was displayed on website.
  • In the US and Canada, Lenovo utilizes UPS for new product shipments
  • Orders may ship before the Estimated Ship Date
  • Orders may enter through Alaska and pass through Louisville, KY before traveling on to final address
  • Cancellation requests may take up to 2 days to process
  • Requests to change configuration or other aspects of the order may require the order to be rebooked.
  • Lenovo does not accept payment via international credit cards, except AMEX.

Re: W-series shipping thread - 2014 edition

I ordered on 1/1/14. At that time the shipping date was estimated at 1/10/14. On 1/12/14 I was notified that my new date is 2/14/14 to arrive 2/21/14. Lenovo didn't know it was going to be late until 2 days after it was supposed to ship?! I've tried customer support, which proved to be a total waste of time. I offered to change my order if they could tell me what part was delayed. They don't have that information, and I apparently can't change my order without cancelling and starting over in the queue. They have no further information or solutions. After reading this forum this appears to be a normal part of Lenovo's supply chain management. This was to be my 4th thinkpad, and is now likely to be a cancellation or my last. I could have handled a reasonable delay, but almost 2 months from order to delivery is absurd.

Man that is sad. I have a theory about these delays: if you scour other brands forums, equivalent machines to the W540 (like the Dell M3800) are also suffering delays. Basically what I think is happening is that both Lenovo and Dell have a contract with the same company who makes the QHD+ panels, and I wouldn't be surprised if this company also has a contract with Apple for their Retina displays. My theory is thus: Apple is actively sabotaging, in a legal way (with contract agreements), the release of equivalent Macbook Pro competitors. They have succesfully been doing it for almost six months now, and I'm pretty sure a lot of impatient people went to towards Apple after long delays that Lenovo and Dell have had in releasing their respective products.

Re: W-series shipping thread - 2014 edition

I ordered a W540 in the last week of December, during an Australian online sale event. The estimated shipping date at the time of ordering was the first week of January.

Come January, the shipping date was removed completely (and still is). I spoke to Lenovo customer service a few times regarding my order, and they confirmed engineering issues with the W540. Specifically issues regarding the swappable harddrive - you probably also have ordered a swappable harddrive instead of the default DVD burner.

From what I understood the machines (there were multiple W540s with the same issue) were already manufactured but didn't pass the Lenovo test. Supposedly engineers are working on the case, which makes it difficult for them to give an exact date. It wasn't possible to ship out the W540 without the removable drive, as the testing is being done on the whole machine.

I'll let you know if I hear more from Lenovo regarding the W540. The W540 was going to be my W520 replacement, and if the issues takes too long I might decide to cancel the order completely.

This doesn't sound promising. I ordered my w540 on 1/11/14 with an estimated ship date of 1/21/14, however I just ordered with the standard optical drive and not the ultrabay, so we will see if that's the only backup. I also ordered the 3K IPS, so hopefully that's not the backup either.

It seems weird that even though the W540 was up for sale not sooner than four months after the official announcement, it still (?) has engineering issues.

For what's it worth: I don't mind the fact that Lenovo has stringent quality control issues. Sorting out all problems in the factory and subsequently sending the W540 to customers sounds better than the other way around. As long as Lenovo (read: their customer service and websites) is upfront and honest about any issues. Upfront and honest. And honest.

In my experience the ideal laptop manufacturer doesn't exist. Anyone who tells you otherwise just hasn't been around long enough...

Good luck anyone waiting for that shiny brand new W540 monster machine!

As of last night, adding  any color sensor option on the US site delayed shipping by over 4 weeks. If you select a color sensor, and notice that your product will ship in over 4 weeks, unselect the color sensor  and see if that improves things.

This issue seems to have resolved as of 1/19.

Hey rhodeswarrior, same order time, same country, same build config (with regards to swappable HDD).

Glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this!

I got a phone call Sunday lunchtime explaining that there was an issue with the swappable HDD bay, and that there'll be an update Tuesday. I guess it came early as I have a shipping estimate now (7th Feb for shipping, 14th Feb for delivery). Ordered 30th Dec 2012

Edit: I should add my estimated shipping of sometime in mid-Jan was removed as well.

Build details: 15.5 3K IPS, i7-4800MQ, 2nd HDD, No colour sensor.
