W500 64bit Vista Install, application

2009-02-12, 14:10 PM

I am considering installing 64 bit visa on my new W500.  Couple of questions for all of you....

1. do you notice an improvement in performance on the 64 bit edition?

2.  I know drivers are out there for 64 bit, but what about included applications i.e. Roxio, ho do i put them back on after the install?

Edit:  Mark any insight?

No.

Download from Lenovo Support Site. All drivers/devices work fine.

I've heard 64-bit is actually only improving application acces to memory. A demanding application can address more memory and thats its. Also I had problems in Vista while having Photoshop and Revit Architecture opened so I guess this 1 more gb of ram should matter.

I can't find Roxio Creator on lenovo support website. With RecordNow (bundled with R60) it was easy - you can even google it now. But I haven't got any luck in finding Roxio Creator, both with their website search and google.

Re: W500 64bit Vista Install, application

The AMD64 (Intel 64) architecture also has twice as much general-purpose integer registers (and all are 64 bit), make much more registers available to applications.

This makes applications which are intensive on CPU integer calculations run much faster.

However, there aren't many applications that run natively on 64 bits yet.

Also, the fact that more memory is available to Windows makes the system a lot faster, even if all applications were 32 bit.

Anyway, if you're in doubt there seems to be no point in giving yourself the trouble of installing Vista 64, unless you do it for fun. It can't be noticeably faster for most things.
