W500 - Cannot recover to factory install

2008-12-03, 5:13 AM

I am trying desperately to recover my W500 to factory settings, but to no avail. The user guide says to restart and press the ThinkVantage button to enter recovery utility. At the displayed screen, pressing F11 sends me straight into Windows.

I've also created a recovery DVD using the ThinkVantage utility in Vista. Booted to DVD, but there is no restore to factory setting option. It will only allow restore to a backup - although I have no backups, so no help here either.

My Bios version is also up to date.

I know this question has been asked before but I haven't seen it answered anywhere. Any help?

there are two ways to create recovery media.

If you want Vista R&R media it should be 1boot cd and 3-4 dvd´s.

Go to start--programs--thinkvantage--create R&R media. There should be two options, you may have choosen option one.

Try option two.

Ask me how pleased I am that I am almost an expert at this. I would certainly rather not have had to recover my new machine so many time....

Anyway I am not sure when you are pressing the blue button, but you need to shut the machine completly down, then press the power button. Watch the screen carefully and at some point near the beginning of the start up routine there is a quick flash saying to press the blue button or something like that. Press it then and you should get to the recovery options.

pressing the blue button after windows has started brings up different options, not the recover to factory contents.

let us know if you get it done..

I thank you all so much for the help! I needed to restore my W500 back to factory and this thread helped a lot.

I created the R&R dvd's just incase then rebooted my machine, pressed the blue button right as the THINKPAD logo came up, let it load, then noticed that there was no restore to factory listed. I then clicked on the Advanced restore, and the 3rd option down on the left says "Restore your system" click on that, and the bottom option is to restore to factory. TA DA. I did not have to use the DVD's because my partitions are they way they should be, but I assume the DVD's would load the same?

Thx again all.

Glad that everything worked for you :smileyhappy: and yes the DVDs would do exactly the same.
