W500 Fingerprint Reader Problems

2008-10-07, 16:58 PM

A few days ago, I ran ThinkVantage Update and received updated fingerprint reader software. Since it installed, the fingerprint reader stopped working and system logins (from boot and from waking from sleep) have slowed to a crawl. I uninstalled the fingerprint software and everything works again.

Of course, I fired up the Fingerprint Utility and tried to see what was going on, but my previous fingerprint profiles were gone and an attempt to enroll new prints into the system threw an error that stated "Could not connect to fingerprint reader" (paraphrased). PC Doctor says the reader is working just fine on the internal USB bus.

Thanks!

nope. didn't fix it. I'll try the suggestion in the following post next. Looks promising.

I had the same problem.  The fingerprint reader worked great for two weeks.  Long enough for me to be hooked. Then the dreaded systems update ran and my fingerprint reader stopped working.  I went to the Support Center and downloaded the Vista 32 driver from:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70598

I ran it as directed on the Lenovo web page.  No joy. To make it work I had to first uninstall the driver then install it.  Now all is well.

This is a dumb problem for Lenovo to be causing.

Re: W500 Fingerprint Reader Problems

just to add my two cents to this, I was having terrible problems with my fingerprint reader that I just couldn't get to the bottom of at all, up until I found out it was my firewall, Comodo, that was causing the problem.  everything had worked fine for me, with Comodo, up until a new driver install. when that happened, I first got completely locked on the Windows logon screen, then when that stopped, I was able to login, but absolutely no fingerprint reader.

what I needed to do was boot into safe mode and go and add %systemroot%\system32\LogonUI.exe and %path to lenovo fingerprint software%\FPApp.exe to the "safe list" in Comodo.  if they were already present, delete them and add them in again, because your firewall may have tagged a previous version as safe, but not the one that's now installed.

since this, my fingerprint reader is working 100% now, so I'd say try to disable your firewall completely first (not the easiest thing to do, depending on the vendor), then if nothing changes, if you can, save your profile, uninstall it, uninstall all your drivers, then install the newest driver from the support site.  if it works at this stage, reinstall your firewall, if it breaks again at that stage, you'll need to follow what I did with Comodo, with your own firewall.

hope this helps.

I could never use the fingerprint reader on my W500 with Vista 32 and this thread was not very encouraging.

After calling Lenovo I uninstalled and reinstalled the fingerprint application and it works fine now.

I will backup the fingerprint data in case I need to reinstall later as this software seems to get easily corrupted.
