W500 is extremely noisy

2008-10-12, 2:36 AM

In the top left corner, the display card is squeaking (fan is off). It is extremely noisy.

Driver Packaging Version    8.52.4.3-080821b-068591C-Lenovo

Switching to the X4500 the problem still remains.

If one  go to the CCC and and click "3D" -> "Standard Settings" in the "Graphics Settings"panel, the noise immediately amplify many times.

Hello,

it seems your TP suffers from so called cpu or coil whine.

Please try to disable CPU powermanagement in BIOS.

1. Power system on.
2. At ThinkPad splash screen, press the F1 button to enter system BIOS.
3. Once in BIOS: Config --> Power --> CPU Power Management --> Disable
4. Once finished, hit F10 and select "Yes" to save your configuration

This may be have an affect to total run time while run on battery.

Regards

Andreas

My top left is quiet

but the hard drive is spinning and making noise all the time.

I hate the noise, it is annoying in a quiet room

Are all of you experiencing noise with you W500. I am keen to buy one, but am concerned about this whine, and the hard disk spinning. How would you compare to other laptops of similar specs? or to the lenovo T61?

thanks.

Hi,

Thanks Andreas,

I had a disturbing high-pitched noise on my w500. Your suggestion made it disappear.
