W500 preloaded with XP but with Vista sticker??

2008-09-12, 7:06 AM

Sorry for bringing this up again.  I've only mentioned this briefly as a reply to another post but I never got to post this on its own.

I just received the the Thinkpad W500 with the "Vista Business downgrade to XP Professional" option.  The computer came preloaded with XP, yet the certificaton of authenticity sticker on the bottom says  Vista Business (with the corresponding product key).  It doesn't come with any disks at all.  I'm confused now because 1) Shouldn't it be a XP sticker/product key?  and 2) does the Vista Business sticker mean that I should have received a copy of Vista as well?

I'm thinking about calling up tech support to ask, but I just want to see if anyone knows about this.

I'm assuming it's not a big deal because if I ever need to repair my system with the recovery disks, it would not ask me for the XP key?

Thanks.

You should burn your recovery disks and save them. I shouldn't be prompted for a Windows Key with them but it will be locked into a Lenovo computer. You need to provide your own media to install Vista Business but do not need to purchase a key. Some people still require to use XP so it's nice to have it pre-installed for you.

Good luck with this.  The key is an OEM key and it's impossible to find OEM media without also purchasing another key.  The key won't work with retail off-the-shelf Vista.

I just threw a copy of Vista Biz from our Microsoft Select (volume license) agreement on mine and we just won't report it as a used activation.  We're legally entitled to a copy of Vista Biz due to the Vista COA anyway.

If you could get Lenovo to send you the Vista restore discs you could use that key with them though, or if you have a friend with a Vista disc from Dell or something, it should accept the key on your sticker.

My T61P came with vista business 64bit installed and I requested the xp downgrade discs when the ordered was processed, for free.

If you have XP preinstalled then you should have been given the Vista recovery discs since this is what you ordered. Otherwise, how are you to load Vista should you choose to do so?  I'd definately persue this asap. You shouldn't have to pay for these recovery discs. Mark Lenovo can vouch for the right to these discs for free since they really should have been shipped with your order.

Here is how it is working on the newer systems according to Shumpert::

The way this works is that they need to run the "Create Recovery media" utility in the Thinkvantage program group.  This will create the recovery cds for the XP preload.

The rescue partion (F11 on POST) contains the vista preload.  If they want to try Vista they can press F11 to restore it BUT they MUST create their XP cds before they do this.

Once the Vista preload is on the system they can create a Vista RCD set but they have to have a multiburner drive to do so.  It's 3 recordable DVDs.

Edit: More information in this thread.
