W500 upgrade main HDD - reinstallation

2008-10-31, 17:56 PM

Hi,

I have just received my new W500 and I would like to upgrade its main HDD to 500 GB, however the thinkpad did not come with any installation DVDs, CDs. How do I reinstall the OS and the Lenovo utilities on the new main HDD?

Appreciate it in advance,

George

"Create Product and Recovery Media" from the ThinkVantage menu. Not sure about the partitions though, but it should format the disk all by itself correctly. If it doesn't, you still have the first harddisk to make another disk.

Cheerioh,

George,

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on your purchase!

You have a few options:

1. You can create a set of recovery media yourself through Rescue and Recovery (a ThinkVantage software tool).  There should be a link to this in the ThinkVantage folder under All Programs.  You would need to make sure you have the appropriate recording media based on the type of optical drive (CD-RW vs. DVD-RW).

2. Purchase pre-made recovery media from Lenovo.

3. For advanced users only - use a hard drive cloning tool such as Symantec Ghost.

Regards

I was reading that there is a way to do a move from one Hard Drive to another using the hard drive tools provided by your hard drive company.

I'm interested in what progress you make with this.

Hi,

Well, I successfully used Acronis True Image Home 2009 to backup a image of my Hard Disk to a external drive then restore it to a new hard drive. I was surpised that I didn't get a message to revalidate my OS which is a good thing since I might do it again to move to a different drive. You can use any drive image tool (like ghost I guess or any of the linux free tools) but I picked that one because I used it before with a Seagate drive and had a GUI.

And, is it a problem if you need to reactivate Windows? Again, this may sound stupid, but do you have only a certain number of reactivations available for one Microsoft OEM software product?

Hi,

Option 1: in the Rescue and Recovery I only see the option to backup my enitre HDD --> will that create the required startup media?
