Re: W510 cannot go into sleep mode.

2010-11-02, 3:15 AM

I've done some research into my sleep issue. I looked in Windows' event log and I saw that it did recognize the computer crashing the last time it failed to go into sleep mode.

Here is the data from the event log:

Error level: Critical

Source: Kernel-power

Event ID: 41

Task category: (63)

General: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Details:

I did a little research on this, and it appears Intel's C-state technology might be a culprit. This issue is related to sleep mode and has been experienced on other computers. I've read that disabling C-state in the BIOS might help the situation, although from my understanding it would consume a bit more power and might increase the idling temperature of the CPU.
Does anyone else have any experience disabling C-state or speedstep (another thing that I read could be disabled to alleviate the situation)?

Re: W510 - Cannot go into sleep mode

2010-11-05, 18:58 PM

I've had my laptop for a little over a month now.  I didn't realize til now that I have a sleeping issue with this computer, because I usually just turn it off.  I didn't even expect this powerful machine to have problems.  I've read through the thread and updated all the BIOS and am still experiencing this problem.  I'm not fimiliar with the Windows' event log, so I'm not sure what the reason is for failing to go into sleep mode.  Similar to xtsubarublazin I'm also in architecture, and theres really no time to waste sending the computer in to get fixed or having it fail.  Earliest would be December and it would probably take forever with all the holidays.  Hope a solution will be found soon!

@112t53,

Do you have any 3rd party RAMs installed or is it a Lenovo preloaded RAM? Did you change the HDD as well? Please try reseating the RAMs and HDD to see if it helps.

If it still does not, please fill in the form which I've posted in page 2 of this thread.

Re: W510 - Cannot go into sleep mode

2010-11-26, 1:18 AM

I am having the same problem, all updates from Lenovo have been applied and all Microsoft fixes.  Hang still happens.

What I have been able to find is:  have the wireless switch off when the W510 is off. Power on the laptop and use a wired connection.  Using this only and never have the wireless switch to off seems to allow the sleep mode.

This is not a good solution to not use Wireless.

From all the postings it seems that the W510 model and sleep features have turned this computer into a desktop.

What are the plans for this to be resolved?

Just applied the latest Wireless driver from the lenovo site: 13.4.0.9 and it does not resolve issue.  Funny how system update did not pick up this newer driver but found a link on the Intel and HP site.

Re: W510 - Cannot go into sleep mode

I just got a 510 type 4319-2PU back from the tech department. They replaced the system board and I'm still experiencing an issue with this particular laptop. When the machine goes to sleep, it does not wake. the lights flash a series of 3 flashes. I've tried all updates, different memory, different batteries, different DVD drives, BIOS reset, power supplies, etc.

It is going back to the tech department tomorrow. I'll keep you all posted if they find anything.

Re: W510 - Cannot go into sleep mode

I would like to report a STUPID workaround that seems to work (at least for me) every time.

Before the W510 goes into the "flash forever limbo mode", there is actually a significant delay ..... maybe 2 seconds.... it is the time between you opening the cover after sleep, and the actual start of the blink-forever cycle.

If you are able to press the ON-OFF button during this time, it seems that somehow the entry into the blink-forever cycle is aborted - and the machine is able to wake from sleep.

Your mileage may vary.

Re: W510 cannot wake up from sleep

2010-12-07, 21:08 PM

My W510 (Model - 4318CTO; Windows 7 professional 64) a few weeks old! and I see same problem. During wakeup it is flashing all the lights approximately every 4 seconds. This continues forever. To break out of this cycle I have to press and hold the power button until it shuts down. I tried all possible troubleshooting I can think of such as updating drivers, BIOS, windows update, re-installing OS(factory default).

Initially, I did not notice this problem(because I always use to shut down) otherwise I would have returned it. Now it is out of return window.

Re: W510 - Cannot go into sleep mode

2010-12-09, 5:58 AM

I also have had this problem, but recently I found a possible cause at least for my case.

I am using a thinkpad mini dock at my work place and a port replicator at home. The mini dock at my office has several attachments: external monitor, USB keyboard and mouse receiver, label printer, and 'eSATA external HDD drive'. The port replicator at my home has only external monitor and USB mouse receiver. When I finished my work at my office, I just went to a sleep mode on the mini dock. At home I resume from the sleep mode (waking up has worked well), BUT when I tried to go to a sleep mode or to shut down at home after I resumed my W510, the HDD indicator just blinks forever and ended up with forced shut down by pressing the power button. I suspected my W510 tried to shut down or disconnect a device  to dive into a sleep mode or shut down, but it has a problem with the suspected device that it can't control. The most suspicious device was my eSATA external drive attached to my mini dock at my work place so I just detached it using the safe removal icon before went to a sleep mode . Then, this issue have been gone for a week.

If you have a similar setting like mine, I belive it is worth to try.
