W510 DVD drive issues

2019-04-30, 2:46 AM
Hello all; Having issues with the HL-GT30N model optical drive. Most times it shows in This PC as Powered Off, it won't burn an audio CD on a CD-R. Also too, it won't read a software installation CD or an Audio CD which was compiled on a T43P I have. Is it a restriction of the drive that only CD-RW works ? Shall I consider it on its last legs ? Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Regards, Donald

Hello,

Given that the HL-GT30N DVD drive may be nine or more years old, it could be that it has begun to fail.

Just to rule out it being a Windows issue, you could try booting the ThinkPad W510 from a Linux Live USB flash drive (Ubuntu, Knoppix, etc.) and see if the computer will read CDs/CD-Rs from the HL-GT30N DVD drive.  If problems persist with an entirely different operating system, though, than it is a hardware issue and you'll want to replace the HL-GT30N DVD drive with a suitable replacement.  I believe any 12.7mm high SATA CD, DVD or Blu-ray drive will fit in the W510, but you might want to make sure you get one with an appropriate bezel in case the W510's has a custom shape (I don't have my W510 near me to check this).

Thanks Aryeh;

   I will give the Linux a try and go from there. The W510 DVD does have an offset in it so I'll keep that in mind if replacement is needed. I'll post back with the results.

Donald
