Re: W520 BIOS Bug? (Please fix or comment, Lenovo)

2014-10-09, 8:55 AM

Fred, I have a sneaking suspicion that I've been facing the same problem for a while now on my W530. I didn't play around with the vt-d settings, but with any of the recent BIOS'es for W530, I can't boot into Ubuntu with discrete graphics enabled. Related thread at http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/w530-bios-upgrade-breaks-nvidia-support-in-linux/m-p/1703473#M6480

Can you try  BIOS version G5UJ17US followed by a 'reset bios to defaults' ? (The reset to defaults step was very important in my case). That is working satisfactorily for me for vanilla ubuntu without any special kernel boot params. I use rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1 though, to make nvidia behave nicely.

slartibartfast,

Thanks for the pointer to

Good for you that going back to G5UJ17US made your Ubuntu work again, but from your thread,  the latest BIOS updates for w530 sound pretty scary.

So, unless I hear DIRECTLY from Lenovo that things have been fixed, I won't touch my BIOS, which is still at   G5ET93WW (2.53).

I don't really use external monitors, but when I do, I just use my Chromecast which works perfectly for what I want to do. I have yet to get HDMI to work with sound in Linux in Optimus mode on my W520.

The Chromecast is great assuming you want to display what is going on in your browser to a TV.

There two (actually 3) BIOS checkpoints from which you can't roll back.

2.50, which you have already crossed.

2.55, which is where I am.

and 2.60, which is the latest.

I think you have the headroom of one version before you get locked in. You can try out 2.54 without any risk. Probably worth a try. It's odd that it is working for me at 2.55 and not for you at 2.53. If anything, BIOS upgrades have broken things. Also, the reset BIOS to defaults was elusive, but that's what worked for me. i.e. Just going back to 2.55 didn't make it work automatically for me. Some settings probably get mungled up between BIOS upgrades/downgrades. So that's worth a shot too, even at your current version and at 2.54.
