W520 Dock Questions

2018-06-07, 21:33 PM

So I have both a 433815U (04Y2071) and 433835U (04Y2074) dock. The first is supposed to be the 90W version which doesn't support Quad Core W520. I bought both versions from ebay and the 04Y2071 seems to be working when I dock my laptop on it. Not sure what to make of it. Both docks have the wedge power connector. The 04Y2071 came with a 90W and the 04Y2074 came with a 170W.

Does the 90W dock just charge slower?

By plugging in the 170W adapter into the 90W dock, I figure it should work just the same. A 90W supply isn't even recognized by the W520 as usable while the system is powered.

Both docks pass the center pin through and the resistance from the center pin and ground is what tells the laptop what the max output from the power supply is.

The rest is from memory and I have no round-connectors to test with, but I am fairly sure it is right.  You can use the 170W adapter with the 90w dock, except for the fact that the 2 notches on the round connector on the power supply get in the way.  A T40 security torx bit will fit into the plug (the hole in the center fits over the signal pin.)  The T40 pit can be turned cutting the notches off.  This is not a good idea if you want to sell the adapter later.

I discovered the difference is what Power Adapter the dock ships with. The 433815U dock ships with a 90W power supply. The 433835U ships with a 170W.

@richk Both docks have the Wedge Connector. So it is not necessary to modify the port.
