W520 Graphical applications crash during start-up

2012-02-20, 16:09 PM

Hi everybody,

I am not sure if this has been answered before, but I haven’t been able to find any solution. My problem is that several GPU heavy applications often crash during start-up. By trying several times, changing the Performance value in Power Manager and so on, they will eventually start up, but then I can’t figure out why it suddenly works - what fixes it one time might not work the next time. I have a ThinkPad W520 with NVIDIA Quadro 2000M and the Intel HD Graphics, and I suspect that the problem is somehow caused by the switching between the graphic cards. In the NVIDIA Control panel I have set all applications to run with High Performance NVIDIA processor (this was also set when I installed the applications that crash). I always have the computer set to “High Performance” in the Power Manager when working, so one would think that the NVIDIA GPU would be active. I have tried changing the “Run with graphics processor->” with both graphic cards, but the programs still crash most of the time I try to start them up.

Programs that crash during start-up include Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max 2012, Next Limit RealFlow 2012, Adobe After Effects and more.

I hope someone has got a solution to this problem; it is so annoying spending 5 minutes opening my programs on a computer I thought was built for this purpose.:smileysad:

Thank you!!:smileywink:

Stian

After setting my GPU to discrete in BIOS, I don't seem to have any problems. Does anybody know if it is possible to fix this problem while still using NVIDIA Optimus?

Thanks!

I seriously doubt it.  The app marking function for which gpu to use doesn't seem to work.
