W520: Latest NVidia drivers do not work with DisplayLink adapter

2011-04-21, 16:34 PM

I have a W520 with the Quadro 1000M.  I downloaded and installed the latest 64-bit NVidia drivers version 8.17.12.6696 published on April 20, 2011.

I purchased the W520 assuming like the T520, it would support a Quad Monitor setup.  I was very disappointed to learn that it cannot drive 4 external monitors, only 2 max.  This is shown here.  Therefore, I must continue to use my DisplayLink adapter.

The last version of the NVidia drivers from Lenovo had no problem with my EVGA UV Plus+, UV-19 DisplayLink adapter.

But with the 8.17.12.6696 release of the NVidia drivers, the DisplayLink adapter can no longer be used.  When I plug in into the USB port, the NVidia kernel crashes and restarts repeatedly, and my screens flash, forever, until I unplug the DisplayLink adapter.

The Windows Event Log contains this message, repeated:

Log Name:      System

FYI The latest Nvidia Verde 270.61 WHQL release is newer and works fine. No INF file hacking required. Can be downloaded from NVIDIA driver 270.61 WHQL - LaptopVideo2Go Forums and offers more features. Maybe you could try that one.

A quick test with the Optimus test tool reveals that the automatic switching works better than ever. Can be downloaded from Optimus test tools finally in users hands - LaptopVideo2Go Forums

I am familiar with the page for the Mini-Dock Plus Series 3, which shows 3 external displays plus the laptop display. This does not involve a USB based adapter.

Are you using a Mini-Dock Plus Series 3 ?

You might be referring to this page

Yes, I have the Mini-Dock Plus Series 3.

I didn't realize this until after my purchase, but the W520 does NOT support driving more than 2 external monitors plus the internal LCD.  That's why the DisplayLink adapter is necessary.

Can't fathom why the T520 can do Quad monitor but not the W520.  Would love to hear from Lenovo regarding that design decision.

Might want to ask your question at http://www.lenovoblogs.com/yamato/?language=en, too. He just posted a blog post about Optimus.

Hi,

I too am disappointed at not being able to drive my 4 monitors directly, but I am using two DisplayLink adapters with 8.17.12.6696 with no problems at all. I have a stock W520 - 427637U - Quadro 1000M. Perhaps the issue is with your version of the DisplayLink driver?

Has anyone determined why the W520 doesn't support driving more than 2 monitors with the mini-dock etc?

No.  Lenovo has been mum about the issue.  Seems odd their top of the line ThinkPad won't do this.

I saw a post by Keith Combs saying that the W520 lacks "Hybrid Optimus" capability (http://blogs.technet.com/b/keithcombs/archive/2011/03/28/lenovo-thinkpad-w520-mini-review.aspx)

Hence, the inability to drive 4 external monitors. Is this a hardware or software(i.e. bios, drivers etc) issue?

This link is working to the W520 review by Keith Combs, that mentions "Hybrid Optimus" capability.

The fact that all these display driver issues weren't worked out for the 520 is abhorrent.  My mini dock sits in the corner of my office, collecting dust as an embarassing reminder to the IT department why ThinkPads are happy to foist untested stuff on the masses.  The little guys like us get caught in never ending cycles of delays and stalls, whereas just the enterprise customers have the clout to insist this stuff be returned for something workable.
