W520 Removable HDD Tray Stuck

2012-10-05, 22:45 PM

Hi everyone,

We have 2 W520 where we replaced the stock optical drive with an aftermarket HDD tray.  On one of the systems, we can't seem to pull the tray back out anymore. It seems totally stuck.  The other system allows the tray to come out without problems, and the two are using the identical tray.  Any ideas on how to unstuck the tray?  Is there any way to open the cover to see what might be catching?  The amount of force we've tried to use is high enough we don't want to try anymore to force the tray out.

if you don't already have it, you might want to download the hardware maintenance manual here:

http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t520_t520i_w520_hmm_en_0a60078_07.pdf

if you pull the keyboard, and maybe the bezel/palmrest, you might be able to get the bay adapter moving outward with some judicious and careful leverage.

I have the opposite problem, my HDD tray won't stay stuck! Sometimes if I turn my laptop so the HDD is facing down, it may fall out! Since I sent it to Lenovo it's only happened once, but that's still insane! Whether or not it's "locked" doesn't matter, it can still fall out. Before I sent it this happened all the time.
