W520 USB Port Driver Problem

2018-03-20, 4:18 AM

Some time ago, the USB ports on the side of my W520 stopped working. (It seems like it happened during a Windows update, but I may be forgetting something). The one on the back works fine. Periodically, the Lenovo system health application runs and tells me there is a problem and suggests reinstalling the driver.  However, it cannot find the proper driver to install.

Is there a place on the Lenovo site (or an external site, if not on Lenovo) where I can download the proper driver?  Where should I save it on the hard drive, so it can be found by the system and then installed?

BTW, when I run Linux from a CD, it finds and uses the 2 side USB slots, so there's not a hardware problem.

Thanks,

Phil

Re: W520 USB Port Driver Problem

Hello,

This is the latest USB 3.0 device driver released for the ThinkPad W510:

TitleUSB 3.0 Driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP - ThinkPad

URLhttps://pcsupport.lenovo.com/uu/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-W-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-W520/downloads/DS015025

If you are running a newer version of Windows (8.1 or 10) it is possible there is a newer device driver available from the Microsoft Update Catalog, in which case deleting the USB driver in the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC) and checking for updated drivers may resolve the issue.

Re:W520 USB Port Driver Problem

My problem has been corrected, seemingly by a Windows update, possibly by a BIOS update.

It was a software problem of some kind and some system update corrected it.  I never got n answer from the post and I never explicitly did anything to solve it.

I wish I understood better, but that's all I know.
