W520 mSata SSD Intel 530

2013-10-15, 18:14 PM

Hi all,

Does anybody know if the new 240Gb Intel mSata 530 is compatible with my Thinkpad W520? And will the full disk encryption work?

I have seen others having issues with older Intel SSD drives with the encryption.

I contacted Intel who said it would work as long as the BIOS of the laptop has ATA password option. But they said contact Lenovo to ensure compatibility.

Thanks for any help,

Richard

Lenovo didn't ship this mSATA in the ThinkPad, and given past issues with some intel SSD, i don't think you will get an official answer from Lenovo.

Also, I haven't seen anyone talking about this on the forum before.

Thanks for your input, I'm not going to risk the mSata, I have read about lots of problems too.

I think I will go with a Samsung 840 pro which seems to get good reviews and should be compatible.

I have used a Samsung 840 Pro 256gb in my W530 and have had no issues with it whatsoever.  I love it.

I also have used Samsung 830 256gb and Intel 520 180gb, but no mSata (yet).  All my HDD have been relegated to external backups, gifts, or clutter.

Not exactly the same setup, but I have a T520 using an mSata Intel 525 SSD with 128GB and it works like a champ. I have no clue about the encryption though...

My 2 cents...

The are problems with Intel SSD 530 and ThinkPad W520. Many people, including me, are complaining about startup problems ... see this thread: https://communities.intel.com/thread/44258

It seems that Lenovo does not care about BIOS implementation for W520 to support the newer ATA feature called "Device Initiated Power Management (DIPM) for Software Setting Preservation (SSP)". There is a BIOS update for W530 but not for W520.

Thanks all for you comments. I went with the Samsung 840 Pro in my W520 and it is working great so far with the encryption enabled. I am really pleased with the upgrade.

Only issue is the drive is 7mm and it did not come with any spacers to fit in the 9.5mm rubber mounts in the W520 drive caddy. So I cut up the box it came in to make some spacers........
