Re: W520 shuts off intermittently, no BSOD or shut down

2014-11-12, 17:13 PM

I am not able to test this but I have a suggestion that might help linux users. I previously solved this problem by turning off a power saving feature in the bios that essentially turns off all the idle states in the CPU.  The linux cpupower command confirms this because when this bios feature is turned off "cpupower idle-info" says something like no idle modes detected.

But cpupower allows for a more fine grained turning on and off of idle states.  There is a suggestion in another exchange that the C6/C7 idle states are what causes the machine to shutdown:

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1856997/haswell-sleep-states.html

So it may be sufficient to just shut these idle states down with commands like (perhaps in the rc.local):

cpupower idle-set --disable 4

cpupower idle-set --disable 5

This may improve the power consumption over my previous solution.   It would be interesting to know if anyone has success with this formula.

[Okay maybe it is a little overkill but..]

It looks to me like all of the issues reported on the last page of this thread are different. All this tells me is that the model is inherently unstable... If anyone could confirm on these suggested fixes that would be great.

We at the T420s forum have no confirmed solution for system instability, random shutdowns and power cycling (infinite rebooting):

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T420s-No-power-blinking-power-Led-won-t-boot/td-p/684845/page/10

Both models are of similar hardware (Sandy Bridge) I believe.

I'm thinking about trying that but the link to whatever post you were referring no longer works. What was theory behind this and what exactly is the procedure? Better yet, maybe help me find the page again. I'm gonna save up pads from my old computers while you're at it.

I have a video, just happened on a recent purchase from ebay, thankfully the seller is working with me on this.

Yes I was working on my bed for those talking about static possible. No I didn't move it when it happens. AND it did it in safe mode and it did it in the BIOS for those who say it doesn't happen in safe mode or it's a software issue, and I got it all on video, showing it happening just because. Take a look.

One more clue is before it was having this shut down fit, it was beeping a sequence when I tried to turn it on and nothing come on the screen, just beeps, 1-3-3-1, but then it finally came on after I took out the battery and waited some time.

FYI, also, its working fine so far today, no issues, no shutdowns, but very frustrating

Ram strip trick actually worked! I did this a few months ago and I've had no more shutdowns. It's a shame I've been grounded to a desk for 4 years before finding this fix.

0 person found this solution to be helpful.

This helped me too

I have the same problem.

Two observations:

1) When I was running windows 7 it was more frequent this failure (now upgrade to win 10, also lenovo updates).

2) May be a temperature issue? I've currently have no problem since I run the computer with the fan at maximum speed (Boost). But still not enough time to strongly affirm it (only one month).

Good luck

Alberto.

After re-seating the ram, and adjusting the cover as pointed out by others in previous post, I have had no more shutdowns & it's been running great for many months now. Thanks!

There was one explanation on a website about a capacitor in the power IC going bad.
The system when jumping from idling to active use will draw more power. Due to a bad capacitor, the power cannot be supplied and will be counted as insufficient power which will lead to system shutdown. See if this theory fits.
