W520 with W10 - unable to start Dolby audio driver

2016-08-06, 18:43 PM

I am getting the following error message, when I start W10 (update from W7):

Unable to start the Dolby audio driver. Please restart the computer or reinstall the driver if the problem persists.

There are no issues indicated in the system and both W10 and Thinkpad apps are updated. Please advice.

I think I saw the info about this as a problem for update of W520 to W10.

You must reboot into the mode  where driver signature checking is not enforced. You then must uninstall the existing Dolby driver, and then install it again. Do not merely repair it, because that will not work.

You can reboot back into the normal Windows startup after following these steps.

You'll also need to do this after the anniversary update is installed.

Thank you, I did some research and I found similar info.

I got stuck at trying to find the files to download the Dolby drivers, as one post, which linked to it, is not working anymore, and the procedures for rebooting into the no checking signature mode are not very clear. I found some Dolby files on n obscure Czech web site and I am still looking for clear instructions how to do the correct booting with no signatures.

I can't say I love W10, but it took me some time before I moved from XP to W7, so it is the same story (smile).

Thank you again.

This is a good link for W520 from a very smart guy, lot of info:

No hint of Dolby drivers, just the warning message that it was not loaded as I described above.

I uninstalled them when I learned more about this, but when I reinstalled them, the error is repeated, because I did not figured out yet, how to reinstal them without allowing the system to check for the driver signature, which seems to be a culprit here.

I'm in Linux at the moment but rebooting Windows 10 into unsigned drivers mode is very easy. From memory you should go into the rescue and recovery section of the Windows 10 settings, and take it from there.

As you have found, if you try to install it with driver signature checking enforced, it will fail. So don't do that.
