Re: W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

you shouldnt try it with a 1.5k resistor. it wont work, its been documented on other forums. the laptop will go crazy not knowing what it is. 135W short works because you cant have less resistance than none, no matter what adapter, and its safe because there is no voltage going through the detection pin.

not sure how you would integrate a switch without it being ugly though. i can see it being done externally, but that would defeat the purpose.  drilling a hole into the keyboard maybe? would be ugly... i dont know if i like the idea of having to carry around a small screwdriver to remove the jump either, but it certainly makes the W530 look like a T530 from every aspect.

If 1.5 Ohm (+1.5 Ohm) does not work, you could also experiment with a higher resisitor, for example 2 Ohm.

Using  a switch was just an idea. To make it more estetic you could maby use the radio on/off switch if you as me never toggle it off anyway. But we are now talking about doing things that would leave a permanent mark.  As long as you have some sort of warranty on your machine that is not something i would reccomend.

just made my 5th revision of the cable, i find that the cable has another advantage as it is flexible, there is another joint to disconnect and it has served me extremely often, more than i thought it would. i once toppled over my laptop when someone walked into the cable, laptop still works, but with my adapter, it just disconnects, as the connection is now straight.

on my cables, blue is negative/ground, black is centerpin, brown is positive.

I modified a 90W temporarily for use when I had misplaced my 170W brick.

It's crude, but works:

Not sure how safe it is though, lol.

The extra bits fit into the notched receptacle, too.

I'm interested in seeing a right angle AC connector for the W530. This is because I am poor at taking care of wires and am quite certain that a right angle connector with a very long strain relief, like the one on the AC adapter itself, would be perfect for my uses.

I just received a brand new W530 because my old thinkpad  w500 died which I purchased in 2008. O.k. first thumbs up that is survived that long, but  5 years later (!!)down the road, how does Lenovo manage to manufacture a predecessor that is BIGGER,  HEAVIER and comes with a AC power adapter that is twice the size and weight of the old one ?  Come on Lenovo, why does a big Californian rival  manage to make THINNER and LIGHTER products every year and ship a Quad Core Laptop  with a 85W Adapter also half the weight and size ? Again, we are 5 yrs. down the line, that's lightyears in the computer world....!

my next laptop will probably either be a Ideapad Yoga (only problem is its not a thinkpad - no trackpoint or pen) or a tablet.

but yes, i completely agree that the laptop runs on a 90W Adapter unless you're doing some crazy **bleep**. Haswell isupon us and the W530 has no successor as of yet, but the T series does.
