Re: W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

2013-11-28, 9:13 AM

To be ohnest i think that if You are looking for sth. more mobile than W530 and yet powerfull go for T series. It is almost the same powerfull as W but comes with 90W power supply :) W530 is meant to work at full power 24/7 so power supply must meet power consumption at all times.

Other manufaturers are assuming that you wont use 100% of computing power, but thinkpad W series assumed that you can use 100% of CPU and GPU power constantly, thats why power supply is so big.

Good point, but still i can't get over the fact that a 5 year old system is slimmer and lighter than the same category product 5 years later. The W500 was the top model back then.  Anyway, thanks

Targus Solution

2014-01-12, 3:36 AM

Based on the information here I adapted my Targus APM69US (nice adapter, very slim, charges phone as well, available cheap, good 12V car solution as well)

It has interchangeable tips with little circuit board inside to inform the charger which laptop is attached. The L112 tip is correct for Lenovo W520, and the signal pin is open to the outer barrel as expected.

Opening the tip plastic is the hard part. I heated in the oven to 300F to release the glue and pried it open. Ugly but it worked. Once open I soldered a jumper from the signal pin to the shell on the little circuit board.

Then I glued it back together (Super Glue) and it is recognized as 135W as expected. Since the tip is interchangeable I didn't modify the charger itself, and since tips are $6 if you goof up no big loss.

I still wouldn;t mind a Dragonfly cable, though!

Re: W530 Power Adapters, 90W vs 135W Vs 170W

Has anybody tried to find a tip adapter for the 170 Watt power supply? Of course, this connector no longer fits into my docking station and I have not been able yet to find a changable tip.

Has anybody tried to find and get one?

Thank you.

I just took a small screwdriver and plied out the plastic bits inside. Now it fits well in all Lenovo-computers and dockingstations. Looks a bit fugly in close-up but who cares?

Thank you for your quick reply!

That's what I call practical. You are right, the looks shouldn't matter and I think I might do the same.

Thanks for the how to here - worked great so far for me - shows up as 135w.

Just to confirm will this charge the battery when the laptop is sleeping?

When its running it says plugged in, not charging....There doesn't seem to be a light to indicate if its charging when asleep or in hibernate or off mode?

it will charge when on or off regardless, even the 90w will charge when off. the light should turn off when fully charged.

when on and not charging, the light should also be off.

Power lights and charge lights, independent ones, and tons of other lights like independednt wifi/wpan/bt lights are whati miss most frm my old T400 and T61 and T60......

if it doesnt charge you may have set the battery to stop charging after a certain percentage. check in power manager for that setting.

Yep that was it - power mgt wasn't charging about a certain % and i was near full...let it drain down a bit and works like a champ!

Thanks again for the great mod!
