W530 Turns off by itself

2017-10-08, 5:17 AM

Over the past couple months my W530 has been shutting off by itself.

At first, the problem seemed to happen every few hours of use. I could turn the laptop back on immediately after shutdown and it would continue to operate normally for a few hours until it would shut off again. Then, the laptop began to shutoff more frequently until it was to the point where it would shutoff two second after I turned it on (the green light on the power button would light up for a couple seconds and then power off).

I have taken it to several repair shops (one local third party shop and one Lenovo service provider here in HCMC, Vietnam) and neither of them found anything wrong with the laptop. But both times after I took the laptop to the shops, the computer began to display the same problem within a few days after gettign the laptop back from repair. For whatever reason, this problem doesn't seem to occur while the laptop is at the repair shop. One idea I do have is that the problem seems to occur after some extended periods of use... When I took my laptop to the shop the last time it had been off for probably 3 weeks... and then seemed to operate fine while they were searching for problems. When I got the laptop back, I used it frequently for about 3 days with no issues until suddenly the same problem occured (laptop shut off by itself, can't turn back on for more like a few minutes before another shutoff). However, if I leave it off for about 2-3 days,  I can get it to operate normally for a while until the problem begins to reoccur.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Troubleshooting tips? The repair shops in town seem to be a bit useless and I don't want to buy a new laptop as I just purchased this one in 2017.

Thanks

It's hard to know without seeing it, but my guess is that the fan runs slowly when it's hot.  The fan speed is tested at startup (when it is cold)  I would try replacing the fan.

I agree with richk. Also, if the fan is ok, the thermal paste/pad between the heat sink and cpu & gpu should be replaced.

I have the exact same problem with mine. Went to three repair shops and no one was cappable to fix it, even changing the mainboard with a used one I got on eBay.  Before and after the change, the behaviour was exactly the same: a couple of hours of work and then shuts off as a TV set when unplugged the power, violently.

I'm hardly considering forgetting Lenovo for my future laptops.  One can't invest thousands for equipement that will last only three years, or less.

Hello bmaguirre,

This may sound a little weird, but have you checked the insides of the W530 for damage?  Maybe something inside the chassis, or a part of the chassis itself, it pressing on the mainboard and causing a short circuit.

Hello Aryeh,

It could be a good idea to take the machine to a repair shop, again, and ask them to make a review as your advice. But I wonder if its worth it, given the number of cases with similar problems I found every day, here at Lenovo's and outside.

Thanks anyway.

Did you guys get this sorted?

It is now Aug 2020 and I have run into the same problem with my T530.

I and my supplier have struggled for weeks, including a motherboard replacement. Problem returned.

Then I read some sketchy comments on the Power management settings in the bios. So I tried some random 'vanillafication' of my settings and crossed my fingers.

It has now been running stably for a couple of hours. I have switched off and on twice with no problems.

If this remains stable, I will do a more thorough post.

Hi,

It's very similar to what happened to me on my W530.  Mainboard replacement didn't fix it; I have exactly the same abrupt power off with the original and with the replaced motherboard.  On my repair shop they even tried with another processor, but didn't worked either.  I remember I have changed too a sort of configurations at bios setup, but nothing that lasted for more than 4 or 6 hours, after that, the problem presented again and again then after seconds.

This brings me to think it's not a mainboard nor processor nor graphics card issue (NVidia is solded at the mainboard).  I think it's a very rare and hard to identify power or voltage issue.

Could you please update how's yours after more testing?

Thanks.

Hi kwaailight, Could you please tell us how's going on with your T530 after changes on bios settings and more testing? Thank you very much.
