W530 Users: How noisy is your laptop?

2013-07-21, 2:37 AM

I'm looking to either get a T430 or W530 to replace my desktop workstation that I use as my main system at home; I'll be using the laptop with a docking station.

One negative I've found with the T430 is people complaining about their laptop being noisy with the fan(s).

Can you current W530 users provide your feedback on how quiet or loud your laptop is?  Ideally I'd want to question whether the laptop is powered on because it's that quiet.

Thank you in advance.

I use Thinkpad fan control on my W530, and under my fan settings (fan turns on at lowest level when CPU temp reaches 55 Celsius, turns off when temp cools to 40 C), the notebook tends to be quiet during light use. Of course, the fan spins up more and is louder under heavy use, but it never gets annoying, in my opinion.

I use my W530 both at work and at home. It is completely quiet. I have to look at the power button to see if it is on or not.

Only if I start playing a game that use a lot of CPU or simillar, the fans start working and there is some noise from the W530, but this noise is not loud at all.

Seconding a vote for TPFanControl.

This is my custom all-purpose fan profile:

Level=25 0
Level=30 1
Level=50 1
Level=55 2
Level=60 3
Level=64 4
Level=69 5
Level=72 6
Level=77 7
Level=80 64

(The sound of my hard drive spinning is about the same volume as fan level 1, so I have no objections to keeping the fan running at 2000RPM most of the time.)

W520: 2960XM, Q2000M @ 1091/1380, 32GB RAM, 500GB&750GB HDD & 500GB SSD, FHD&MB168B+

W550s: 5600U, K620M at 1164/1281, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 3K touchscreen
X200s: SL9400, 6GB RAM, 64GB SD card, WXGA+ screen

The fan is very quiet until I run intensive programs.

But since I wear headphones all day I don't hear much of anything anyways.
