W530: Which Nvidia driver version should I choose?

2021-01-25, 19:43 PM

I wanted to update my Nvidia driver to mitigate a security issue. After struggling to find the proper download page for the standard driver, I found two stable long term (ODE) drivers:

  • R390 U16, updated 21-07-01
  • R418 U9, updated 20-24-06

The older branch got updated lately, but not the R418 branch. So I'm unsure if the latter is secure.

It get's even stranger when looking a the spec PDFs. For the R390 branch it states:

Beginning with the Release 378, the NVIDIA professional drivers no longer support
the following NVIDIA Quadro products:

(long list, including my K2000M)

The NVIDIA support team will continue to address critical driver issues for these
products in Release 375 through March 1, 2018. However, future driver enhancements
and optimizations in driver releases after Release 375 will not support these products.

According to this statement, my graphics card should no longer be supported since early 2018.

The R418 branch specs show my card as actively supported, but there was no driver update since the middle of last year.

This all sounds very confusing.

Since the R390 driver has a known OpenGL problem, I am unsure which version to choose.

Any help is appreciated.

Hello Stepinsky,

Greetings

For device drivers, we only recommend the ones that we have in the support site.

Have you tried to completely remove the drivers, and reinstall new ones from the Lenovo website?

Regards,

Security?

2021-01-27, 16:48 PM

Thanks for your response. The Optimus drivers for the W530 are quite outdated. Since then there had been several security issues, so I had to switch to official drivers. last year official support for the device ended, so I doubt it's advisable to stay with those old drivers.

Just download the latest from Nvidia. P43s and I use the latest from Nvidia as soon as released with no issues at all.
