Thinkpad W530 Wifi 6 Module - Which one will work in my laptop?

2020-09-08, 14:01 PM

Good day everyone!

I know it's an old beast, but it's still solid.  I have had this laptop for years and have upgraded it to keep it performing well.  I just installed a wifi 6 router and would like to upgrade the card in this laptop to support the new AX wifi standards, as my laptop just has an old A/G/N wifi 4 card currently.

I see a bunch of things about a Lenovo "whitelist" of devices that can be installed.  With this in mind, I see cards for sale that seem like they would physically fit in my laptop, but how do I know which, if any, are included in the whitelist?

Have a great week and thanks in advance!

-Tony

Yes the 3-series thinkpads have a whitelist but 1vyrain found a workaround to remove it without hardware flasher.

Size wise the new Intel AX200 modules have a diffrent PCI connector (m.2), but with a mini PCIe conversion bracket I have tested it and got it working in a T430s with 1vyrain.

Now the m.2 bracket was to big to fit in the T430s without using a dremel tool on the magnesium roll cage. But I have seen smaller brackets/combos with AX200 mentioned without the need for dremel that is the size of a mini PCIe card like the 6300N that comes with W530.

Thanks for all the info Fred! With all the work in mind, I might just grab a wifi 6 USB stick.

Hey,

Do you have a link for the adapter that fits W530?

Will the adapter below fit?

Thank you!

I believe that it won't work in the slot, but even if it did, I think the antenna wires won't fit.  The connectors on the W530 antennas are bigger than the card's connectors.

Something like this will work electrically, if there is space in the w530, after whitelist removal.

Note the antenna cord conversion.

I saw a smaller card, but it was no longer available.

M.2 To Mini PCI-E Wi-Fi Adapter Intel 9260 AX200 Wireless 2030Mbps Bluetooth 5.0 Wifi Card 9260NGW 802.11ac 160Mhz 2.4G/5G
