W530 Window 7 to Windows 10 upgrade: "The display is not compatible with Windows 10"

2016-07-15, 15:09 PM

I'd like to upgrade my ThinkPad W530 from Windows 7 to Windows 10.  I downloaded Windows10Upgrade9194.exe from Microsoft and ran it.  The first step it does is check that the computer is compatible with Windows 10.  This compatibility test fails with "The display is not compatible with Windows 10. Check with the manufacturer for support.".  The Lenovo page for Windows 10 support says the W530 is supported.  Any help in resolving this would be appreciated.

Regards, Graham.

Hello,

Have you tried running the ThinkVantage System Update to ensure all of the drivers and the BIOS/UEFI firmware on the W530 are up to date?

I upgraded my old Sony Vaio (Win7Pro) to Win10Pro last week.

I recall various options to initiate the upgrade process: several different exe files available, ISO files, use of Media Creation Tool etc.

I chose to initiate from within Windows Update.  I had to download a bunch of 'critical updates' first ... in order to see the Win10 update option. Thereon in it went without a hitch.

Perhaps worth a look if you can this option within Windows Upgrade.

should be no problem

2016-07-19, 15:40 PM

I've just installed Win 10 on my W530 from a bootable USB stick. Nearly everything is working fine now, there's just a minor problem with a Synaptics touchpad driver option. Most drivers came automatically. The only driver I added was the original Optimus driver from Lenovos website. You will get a "unrecognized acpi device". As far as I know this is just a driver for the WLAN switch, which is working anyway. There's a driver on Lenovo's website for that.

So, W530 is quite well supported. There should be no error.

I suggest:

  • First make sure you have the latest bios for W530 (2.65).
  • Which display settings are enabled in bios? Intel, Nvidia or Optimus? Check your display drivers.
  • Maybe you can try another installation method. You can use Microsoft media creation tool to get a bootable USB stick containing the latest Win 10 ISO image. If you are trying to upgrade an existing installation, just plugin this stick while running your current OS and start "setup.exe". At the final screen chose "keep everything".

Best practice before upgrading: remove all unnecessary software, especially software with deep system integration. Get the latest version of your antivrus software. I usually remove nearly every vendor software. You can afterwards use Lenovo System Update to get any missing driver.

Same problem on a W540. Everything relevant up to date. Tried most recent display drvers through Lenovo, and through Nvidia. BIOS is up to date. MS claims display not compatible. Anxious for a solution.

In the BIOS choose only the Discrete display and also disable Optimus. Then try the Win 10 install.
