W530 battery issues.

2012-09-04, 1:33 AM

I have a brand new W530, that now shows a blinking red X over the battery icon in the task tray. It also won't stay running on battery, instead, going into hibernate as soon as it starts up.

does it run without problem if the battery is removed?

i'd suggest you call Lenovo Service and get a warranty replacement battery. maybe you just got a defective one.

It's a month old now, and it ran fine up till now/ It seems to run fine running without the battery, as well as running on battery now, however, It changed from the original error. now it shows "plugged in, not charging." It runs on battery, but doesn't seem to charge it anymore.

is your battery marked as a series 55 (55+ or ++) or series 70 (70+ or ++)?

It has a red circle marked 70+ It's the one they sent with the laptop.

Re: W530 battery issues.

that's the correct series. i was just curious if you'd gotten a 55 by accident. the 55 is for the w520, which will run the w530, but won't charge as it's missing a protection chip found in the 70.

i see your edit now, the battery/machine is a month old, so i presume it ran/charged properly until now. i'd say your battery needs to be replaced under warranty. it sounds like the chip has died, disallowing charging.

cheers.

Ok, I'll call in the morning and report back. I'm hoping that's the case, and it's not an issue with the laptop itself.

EDIT: Does the 4 year lenovo warranty cover batteries, or do I specifically have to buy the battery warranty(I may have just answered my question)

battery warranties beyond 1 year, to the best of my knowledge, are separate from any thinkpad warranty. i've seen it as a separate selectable item on the system configuration ordering system.

cheers.

ok, figured that much. I'll call them, and hope it's really the battery.

Re: W530 battery issues.

I could be completely stupid..... I didn't realize that the Thinkpad had a charging threshold to maximize battery life. I'm trying the reset like the technician said, but afterward, I'm going to set it to charge to 100% and see if that works. I think the power management stopped the charging of the battery, which would explain the "not charging" but it wouldn't explain the original issue(which went away).
