W530 external speakers have static noise on power

2012-12-19, 6:12 AM

I plugged in my speakers (which work fine for my TV & other computers) and there is a static noise I can't get rid of.  When I unplug the power, it goes away.  I don't have this issue with headphones.  Any way to fix this issue?

Thanks!

One possiblity is to try using a grounded work mat to provide a static-free work surface.

Some appliances, such as certain portable desktop fans or air purifiers, can produce negative ions. If a

computer is close to such an appliance, and is exposed for an extended time to air containing negative

ions, it might become electrostatically charged. Such a charge might be discharged through your hands

when you touch the keyboard or other parts of the computer, or through connectors on I/O devices

connected to it. Even though this kind of electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the opposite of a discharge from

your body or clothing to the computer, it poses the same risk of a computer malfunction.

Hi Catie,

I do not have a portable desktop fan or air purifier and at the moment have a fairly clean desk.  I am not having the same issue with any of my other electronics working in the exact same environment.  Is there another alternative?

I definetly understand how easily the static noise can get on your nerves, it was shot in the dark.

You might be able to reduce the noise by improving the signal to noise ratio. (its possible you might have already tried this) For troubleshooting purposes: Try turning the volume all the way up on the computer then lower the volume on the speakers to the desired level, and vice versa. Is the static level different, or does it just become louder/quieter?

Hi Catie,

Thank you for responding so quickly!  I've tried turning the volume up and down, the bass knob up and down, the static was constant.  The only time it went away was when I unplugged the power from the laptop.  I tried this around the house, on a APS battery unit, just a wall jack..  nothing worked.

It seems like there is an interference when the power frequency is raised by the A/C adaptor, I would consider trying a Ground Loop isolator.

Is the "static" a crackle sound or a constant humming sound?

You know that's a better way to describe it, it's more like a constant hum.. but it's fairly loud!
