How would those of you who are bothered by the W530's fan noise characterize the fan's acoustics.

Mine is primarily the whoosing fan sound with some whining if I really listen to it.

Re: W530 fan noise intolerable

Dear floppy,

I recorded both the fan noise of my T61p (always running, but nearly unhearable, also after minutes of 100% CPU load) and a T530 which I returned because of the noise: At the T530, the fan is not always running like at the W530, but as soon as it starts (and that's indeed the fact after only a few seconds of 20-25% CPU usage), it's the same annoying noise like at the W530, also at 2.730 rpm.

This is a ZIP-file, containing the two MP3-files:

For sure, this is no professional recording: I used my mobile phone, which was held at about 5-10 cm next to the fan. But you can definitely get an impression of the difference, if you hear the two samples loud enough.

Thank you for the samples dark_rider. That pretty much matches with my experience of the W530 and the T61p. I also suspect that kto hears the same thing on his machine (thanks for your response as well, also to huberth). Perhaps Lenovo can tell us whether this is what is to be expected when you buy a T530 or W530. At least that way I will know that I simply made the mistake of buying a notebook that is too loud for my sensitivities and that I have to look elsewhere. Since there are not more people complaining about this kind of noise I find it possible that people have just become so used to having a loud computer that they find this normal, or they are willing to accept this for the CPU power that they are getting in return. Having used a much more quiet machine for many years, unfortunately, I am not one of them.

Too bad that Lenove has not addressed this problem.

I am currently using a T61p with no annoying fan noise.

I do plan on replacing it as soon as the fan noise issue is resolved.

I hope I don't have to "hold my breath" much longer.

In an office environment I cannot hear the noise.  But at home, or even in a quiet conference room at a client site, the noise is intolerable.  If I this was my personal purchase I would have returned it.

Dark Rider: Thanks for the recordings. Despite the improvised means, and some air pressure distortion --mikes are sensitive to wind or exhaust, even when not audible to our ears!-- it's a clear difference between the spectral composition of the 2. What i hear from your w530 seems either/and

  1. much higher RPM
  2. turbulent
  3. no ball bearings (unlikely in this price class)
  4. cheap rotor design (small, no aerodynamic design, as in $0.5 fans)

The T61p's we have around (few dozens in my lab) are passive 95% of the time (no fan), except when loaded or docked. Again, this is an amazingly poor thermal design, plastic dock w/o metal for cooling, nor natural air circulation/convection... Even worse, these docks actually obstruct part of the exhaust vent :-(

The rotation speed of the fan is not as important as the sound level created by air flow over the fan blades and the diffusing heat fins. I was surprised that the fan rotation on my W520 was 2730 rpm and yet I could barely hear the air rushing past the vents. I should mention that both are in the 433830U docking stations which should increase the noise level due to the slight air restriction in the back. The difference between having the fan at 2140 rpm and 2730 was barely perceptible. My db meter read 42db 6 inches from the left hand vent at 2730 rpm and 40db at 2140 rpm respectively.

Either the fan assembly is different between the W520 and the W530 and is creating its own noise component or the air flow routing is creating additional noise. In any case, the fan rpms for both system seem to be around the same figure (2700rpm). People have commented that the W520 is much quieter than the W530 there is another element at work.

My work environment is in a very quiet home office with the computer desk arranged on an inside corner wall. I can hear the white noise from my external WD 2TB Passport drive easily when it is powered and spinning as well as the Hitachi HDD when it is spinning in the UltraBay (it's usually powered down as well).

This is precisely why I mentioned the X301.  The fan in those systems don't annoy me until they get above 4500rpm.

If the fan can run at 2700rpm and be whisper quiet, I am cool with that.  Especially if the system is running at a cool temp.

Thanks for bringing the actual noise level into the discussion.  Noise and heat are important.  The fan is obviously an important part.  Just look at the dual fan Retina.

It's also certainly possible that different tolerances in the fan housing might allow the fan to vibrate along an axis it wasn't meant to, thus causing the additional noise. As such, it would tend to vary between each machine significantly,, rather than between the W520 and W530.

That said, Core [2] Duo chips did not have the same turbo feature that's found in the newer ix chips. Hence, the newer chips will run itself hotter more quickly, and thus necessitate higher fan speeds more often.

For me, the rotational noise of my Scorpio Black drowns out the sound of the fan up to 3000RPM.

Re: W530 fan noise intolerable

Dear gusat,

I'm using my T61p mostly in the Advanced Minidock, but it has a perfect design on the upper left backside so that the fan's openings are both completely free for air circulation. That's why the fan noise is the same, no matter if the T61p is docked or not.

With the T530, it was the same: While I was testing it, the noise was equal both docked and undocked. So the dock is really not the problem.

Concerning the recordings (MP3 files from above): I recorded both within 5 minutes, under the same circumstances, with the same mobile phone in the same room. Because the T61p's fan is always running at level 1, I recorded that, and because the T530's fan is off in idle, I switched it manually to permanent level 1 (the W530's standard fan level - always running) with TPFC, so that both are comparable.
