W540 170W Ultra Dock HDMI and windows 8.1

2014-08-26, 21:43 PM

The W540 has an onboard video card in addition to the NVidia video card. We use AutoCAD and Revit, and will never care for the onboard video card driver. We cannot seem to get the 170 watt Ultra Docking Stations (plural) to work with our W540 Laptops (plural) when selecting the NVIDIA card and using an external monitor. We have updated all the drivers Lenovo has asked us to including the firmware on the docking station. We have followed the instructions to make the change in the BIOS so that the NVIDIA card is only used. We have called Lenovo support twice on two separate occasions. On one occasion, they said we are not the only people to call in about the problem, and that our only course of action is to get another docking station or return the dock to our vendor. Has anyone else had any luck using Windows 8.1, W540 on an ultra dock and using HDMI? Even though I mention HDMI, (because I think it is the main suspect), DVI seems to blue screen the laptop too.

I use W540 and Ultra dock and have 3 external monitors connected, 1 HDMI, 1 DisplayPort->DVI, and 1 VGA.  I have Standard mode set in BIOS which I think means the dock uses Intel Integrated Gfx to output to them.  I did try Advanced mode to force nVidia GPU to drive but had system stability issues in that mode.

For what it's worth, there is a new dock firmware update released today, you might want to give it a shot.

I'll give it a shot as nothing is working now. I'll post my findings.

I will say the limitation in the readme of the firmware update you sent me is important. It translates to I can't use the w540 with the ultra dock, AND use the nvidia card. As a consumer looking to purchase workstation class machines specifically to use the nvidia card, this doesn't sit right.

taken from the readme...

LIMITATION
- Some DP 1.2 monitors stay blank before operating systems bringing up.
- W540 discrete video mode will not work correctly with an external display.
- HDMI audio mute/unmute : unmute will take approximately 1 second.

I keep hoping this gets fixed and keep getting disappointed. I have this problem with Win 7 as well. Standard mode works, provided you don't connect anything to the HDMI port. Advanced mode doesn't work at all.

P.S. Still learning. This post wasn't intended as a solution.

This helped me too

There are about a dozen threads on this forum about the issue, and it is related to the power supplies or how the dock powers the laptop. Apparently the dock does not provide enough power. The only way I was able to solve the constantly shutting down periphery (not just the monitors) was by providng the laptop with its own power supply while docked.
