W540 Backlit keyboard always on

2014-04-07, 19:50 PM

Is it possible to set the backlight on the keyboard to always stay on when the screen is open?

I don't think it is as simple as editing a value. The toggle of backlight/thinklight seems to be in the very low-level keyboard routines, that are almost certainly in the BIOS code itself. That would mean that the current state is either not saved anywhere, or saved in the CMOS. Since it is lost between boots, I assume it is saved nowhere.

I believe the answer is "no", which means I know of no way.

That is ridiculous that their is no way to edit a value to be able to control your PC's peripherals. This is shaping up to be the same as the numlock issue, simple things that lenovo isnt providing solutions for.

Um. Anybody found a way to lock the keyboard light on this brand spanking new "state of the art" machine? My 5 year old Dell Studio XPS dimmed the keyboard backlight after a few seconds of inactivity and turned it back on automatically when you touched it. Macbooks are even better with an ambient sensor that turns it on when needed. This is my first Thinkpad and, truthfully, I am completely at a loss as to why these machines are so revered. I feel like I've stepped into the stone age. Almost everything, from build quality, to screen quality, to workmanship, aesthetics, everything, screams shoddy.

Just curious.  Why did you buy a W540?  Recommendation from a user doing the same type of work as you?  On line reviews?  Desired feartures?  Did you try the unit in a store?  A competitor that wished you well?

I bought mine pre release, sight unseen (except for a W530) based on rave reviews and the IPS screen and excellent Photoshop attributes mentioned by the reviewers. Due to the special order, I'm locked into the machine.

Needed emergency replacement of a lost 5 year old Dell Studio XPS 16. CDW gave discounts to company for Lenovo. Going from a machine like that to this is like stepping back in time 10 years. The power brick is huge compared to the svelte Dell brick... and largely offsets the otherwise very decent travel weight of the laptop itself. The screen, while not awful after lots of calibrating, is not on par with the RGBLED on my old machine. The keyboard as a whole is slightly superior on the Thinkpad, but I hate the Fn key placement and the tiny arrow keys are a dumb design choice compared to the large arrow keys on the Studio. The touchpad... well, what can be said? I have gotten somewhat used to it, but it just rounds off what it is a hugely disappointing experience. Since I have work to do and can't afford the downtime of swapping another computer, I'm probably stuck.

Oh and I hate that the backlight cant be kept on. :-(

Hi!

I would accept a simple BIOS setting for default backlight value after reboot, sleep, cold boot ("off", "low", "high").

Now "off" is default. I would much prefer "low" as default.

That would maybe be much easier to accomodate than remebering the setting?

For me, at least, that would be a good enough solution.

Kind regards

Kazuyuki
