W540 - Fingerprint Reader can't verify after restart

2014-08-16, 2:36 AM

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W540 running Windows 8.1

Every time after restarting the computer, the fingerprint reader doesn't let me log in and gives the message:

"A match for the fingerprint was not found in the fingerprint database"

In the settings the two fingerprints I registered are still there. If I select "remove all" and then add the finger prints back, then the fingerprint scanner works perfectly for login and other purposes, but only until the next restart.

Thanks for any help.

We deploy Lenovo laptop at work. the fingerprint readers on W540s are unreliable. I believe it is a hardware issue, not Win 7. We run 7 and 8.1, and have had several die on PCs with either OS. Lenovo is lightning fast with the replacement part, but they'd better ship some better hardware or they'll pay for it with warrany replacements.

Indeed, today I cannot log on with the fingerprint reader.  Bought the W540 (Win 7 Pro 64) back in ~March 2014.  This happened only once before, but resolved itselt for unknown reason with no help on my part.  Just came back after a reboot.

Today, after coming back from a long data downloald, on screen wake up, the reader was not working.  Not an issue, did some work, then rebooted.  Still no reader. Did the usual checkdisk, still no reader.  Ran the [Fingerprint Manager Pro]  v8.01.26 [64], and it tells me the device is not connected. The device manager does not show the reader, nor does it come up with scan fot a new device.

What am I doing wrong beside using this so called workstation????  Any workaround on this hardware issue?  Next I'll waste my time uninstalling the reader software and try a reinstall....  or call Support.

The print reader they use now is crap. I'd go straight to support. It's a known issue and they'll send you out replacement parts. It's about a 5-10 minute fix.

I don't think it's a hardware issue, but a finicky USB timing disconnect issue.  So not a W540 failure.  Maybe an implementation failure.
