Re: W540 Freeze on boot screen when connected to docking

2016-10-31, 1:44 AM

Over the years with various Lenovo Thinkpads (as oppose to IBM Thinkpads), I've arrived at a personal conclusion that one should only buy n-1 generation of Thinkpads (if decent / solid stability is important).

I don't have experience with the W540.  However, I'm happy with the W541 (I'm not a dock user though).  It seems like Lenovo still hasn't been able to address W540 issues...?  This is really disappointing.

What is BIOS 2.28????  and now back to BIOS 2.27 with no reason/rational to be easily found.

One of many WORSE issues with the W540, is that when it hangs or does not boot, YOU have no idea what the internals are doing.  No i/o light to show activity,  It's a FAST machine when working, but VERY SLOW when you consider all the user wait time trying to figure out if downloading in the background, hung up, crashed or in a loop.

Add the time to repair the crash, check disk, and/or HD restore - makes the W540 a very slow machine indeed.  Not counting the wasted time and lack of use of the workstation.  Never had such problems with a properly configured  REAL WORKSTATION.  Never again.

As an aside, but part of the issues, I was at a library with bad power plugs.   Impossible to quickly visualize if there is power, as the power brick has no light for a quick visual power good.

I installed BIOS 2.28 on 10/19 after I swore I would never update my BIOS again. Foolish me - I now crash during hibernation. The machine hibernates and won't come out of it. I have to keep the power button set to "shut down" and use it when it crashes. I would guess that Lenovo realized there was a problem and removed 2.28 returning to 2.27 as the latest...... Search the forums. So far it is the only problem and not as bad as the last time!!

Re: W540 Freeze on boot screen when connected to docking

My W540 freezes on start up... I have no idea what activity is happening.  I usually wait 1-2 minutes then do a cold boot using the on/off button.  Sometimes it will restart OK, sometimes it take two tries.

Still a POS, as I waste more time with this black box with no idicators.  I'm going to get an Apple sticker and place it on the lid.

I have no issues fixing software problems, I have issues when the hardware does not have the minimum indicators, and a proper mouse pad.  Bought on the shill review of:

http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-w540-2014

and .... the author changed the review.  Initially it was reviewed as a great computer, with a GREAT trackpad.

What is the reason that BIOS Version 2.28 has been removed for W540/W541?

Re: W540 Freeze on boot screen when connected to docking

How is this issue resolved? I now have the latest version of the BIOS installed and when the laptop is turned on I will sit for 5 minutes or more and never turn on instantly like before. I have to shut it down by pressing the power button and sometimes I get into the computer easily by hitting Enter as it starts up and then hitting Esc to boot into Windows. Saturday I had some items on my computer that I needed to access in a hurry and I had an entire meeting stalled because of this issue. What is the permanent fix Lenovo?

Re: W540 Freeze on boot screen when connected to docking

Ever since the 2.28 update my W540 will not come out of hibernate without pressing the power key to shut it down. Frequently after hibernating it when I press the power button it reboots itself and takes forever to do it as you described. I kick myself for updating to 2.28 and after 9 months of problems it had been fixed on 2.26 and was running great....and of course you can't go back. It seems they just can't get it and keep it together. A shame, I've used and loved the Think Pads since their inception but enough is enough. I see 2.28 is back in the download section with a November 2 date vs the original October date so it might have been fixed but that is no use to us since attempting to install it one gets the message it is already installed.

Hello. For whatever reason I looked back on this post and they stated the optical drive was part of the issue. I decided to remove my dvd/cd drive and now it works perfectly. I just need to figure out how to get the optical drive replaced.

Not that simple for me, the optical drive is not in the machine, it's a second SSD and having it in or removed makes no difference...  glad it helped you.
