W540 - Mobile Broadband?

2018-04-05, 18:30 PM

Hi, I have the W540, and I see there is a slot behind the battery for a SIM card, I tried using my SIM card and I still can't use mobile broadband.

so I have a few questions: Can I use mobile broadband on the W540? do I need any drivers?

do it use a special SIM (I use Djezzy GSM)?

Please help me, I really want this thing worked out.

Thanks you in advance.

Welcome to the Community

Make sure your laptop has built-in wwan modem with drivers installed. Have a look at Windows Device Manager -> Network Adapter category. Is there an antry with wwan modem name in the title? Or is there any device with error or in Other Devices category?

If your laptop isn't CTO model, provide its MTM code. It'll allow to check out laptop factory configuration.

Unfortunately, there isn't wwan modem installed in your laptop.
MTM (Machine-Type-Model) is a 10-symbols code, in case of W540 it begins with 20BG or 20BH.
CTO models have "CTO" symbols in MTM code.

No, there isn't software issue. Why "another"? There isn't any wwan modem installed, Device Manager shows that. Anyway, there is a chance the modem is installed but disabled in the BIOS Setup or broken. To confirm that MTM is needed to check out the factory configuration.

In order to use Mobile Internet access feature, you need a WWAN modem. To verify if modem is installed or not, simply open the cover closest to the battery and check, if module is installed. Below a photo from notebookcheck's review, showing empty slot for WWAN modem.

If module isn't present, then you have to buy and install one of following modules:

- FRU: 04X6014, Sierra Wireless EM7345.

- FRU: 04W3842, Ericsson N5321

It's advised to use EM7345, as it's a LTE modem, while N5321 supports only up to HSPA+. Both of them should work fine in your country.

Question: Can you use Sierra wireless EM7305 for 4G instead of Em7345 in a W540 Lenovo?  I am talking Sweden in Europe.

If you are asking, if you can simply install and use the module, then answer is no. Laptop will not boot due to whitelist in BIOS.
