W540 - Replaced 240gig SSD Main drive with 500gig SSD - Can't access free space

2015-08-12, 13:26 PM

I ran out of space on my 240gig SSD that came with my W540, so I bought a new larger drive from Samsung.

I created a system image of my C drive, replaced the hardware, and then booted from a recovery CD. Then cloned the image of the old drive to the new drive.

Pretty standard stuff

However, now, while everyhting works well, I don't have access to the extra space. It's unallocated space, but it's way to the right of my C drive partition, and I can't use any partition tools I can find (GParted,  MiniTool Partitoin Wizard, etc) to move it over to add to the main parition.

At this point, I'm resigned to probably formatting the drive and starting fresh, but I don't know how to do that while still maintaining the Lenovo setup (Backup partition, standby partition, all the Lenovo Programs, etc) and I don't have any installation disks anyway.

Does anybody have any thoughts on how to either re-allocate the free space (Past a hibernation partition I can't move or alter) or how to format a new drive without giving up a lot of the features and functionality of the system?

Unfortunately, trying to get an answer out of Lenovo Tech Support is like pulling teeth out of a badger on fire, so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.

Go to Disk Management and post a screenshot of your partition layout.

Happily.   The 4th partition (the 7 GB one) I can't seem to do anything with at all. Even formatting it with a fresh install of windows 10 is proving difficult. I broke down and tried to just format the entire drive with a USB installation of W10, but even then it was fighting me and I gave up.

Can you move the 7GB partition to the end using something like Partition Wizard?

W520: 2960XM, Q2000M @ 1091/1380, 32GB RAM, 500GB&750GB HDD & 500GB SSD, FHD&MB168B+

Nope, it can't be moved, expanded, or changed in any way, unfortunately.

I spent about 4 hours on the phone with Lenovo support (both basic, and advanced (for which I paid $120 and am not at all happy about))

Multiple techs tried everything that they could think of (most of the things I had already tried) and they came to the conclusion that the partition in question should have been removed at some point by the system, and that they don't know how to take care of it, and since I'm using Windows 10, I have to revert back to Windows 7 in order to deal with it. Some of the stuff they did trying to fix it corrupted/removed my "Revert to Windows 7" files, so there's currently a windows 7 formatting disc on its way to me in the mail, and in five days, I have to call them back and take another crack at it.

Apparently people with Thinkpads don't upgrade their main drive using a sytem image very often... I had to spend about 20 minutes explaining what a system image WAS to a couple of the tech support people.

What you did was this: When you made a system image, you made it 240gb in size. Its like make a copy of a box. Same size, shape, etc. Then you copied it (Cloned) to the other drive, same size and contents.  I made the same mistake when I upgraded a hard drive in a tower I built.

What you need to do is go back to the old SSD and add the 500Gb drive as a second drive. Then re-partition it to include ALL of the space. When finished, use the recovery software to recover everything to the new drive. DO NOT CLONE! You will be in the same situation. Then swap drives. That is how I did mine.

I hope this helps.

The process is a little different depending on the OS on the machine. You are going to need to remove the hibernation partition, expand the C: drive and then put the partition back. Read this first:
