W540/T540 keyboard

2014-08-05, 6:18 AM

My trusty 5yo T500 is operating without the deafening and now failed fan, without hinges, with a broken display frame, without top bezel and pad, with a loose battery, and without a touchpad.  All mechanical parts have failed on me, except the keyboard.

So it is time to get a 2880x1800 replacement, and that is the W540/T540.  (Advice to Lenovo - move that Godd***it power plug to the left side and put a USB on the RHS - for heaven's sake - do your designers even own laptops?)

Unfortunately I have read horror stories about the new off-center keyboard, and the touchpad.  I hate touchpads, so that should not be an issue.  And I am not a keyboard heavy user.

How bad is this issue of the keyboard - being off-center and having lousy feel?  Other serious issues?  Any information will be appreciated.

I'd *strongly* suggest testing the new setup in person. The change is drastic enough - whether one ends up loving it ot hating it - to warrant such an approach.

My $0.02 only...

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

This may be too late for you -- but Iam in the same category, light keypad user, hate touchpad.  I was very apprehensive when ordering my W540 with numeric keypad on right.

I was pleasantly surprised.  Off center is not an issue.  And keyboard feel is not an issue.  I am happy with the keyboard and the numeric keyad was never a bother.

Just like you my T500 lost all its mechanicals.  Hinges (actually display mag frame broke at the hinge), fan, battery loose, anything mechanical, bezel.

Also the idiots still put the power connector in the back (don't do that - do you designers own a laptop???).  But they did put 2 USB on RHS (wow took them a decade to figure that one out).

Now I have lost some keys on the RHS of the keyboard on my W540.
