W540 - TUSB3410 Boot Device Driver Missing

2016-02-03, 21:51 PM

Hi,

I did a fresh install of Windows 10 64bit on my w540. I thought I had installed all of the requisite drivers but unfortuantely the Device Manager is showing a missing driver under "Other Devices". The missing driver is the TUSB34310 Boot Device. Google searches show this may be related to the USB 3.0 drivers. Unfortuantely, the only USB 3.0 driver available for the W540 seems to be for Windows 7. I tried but was unable to install those drivers.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Doug

Hello and welcome,

Not sure but the USB 3.0 driver may be part of the Chipset driver for Win 10. Have you tried this:

Re: W540 - TUSB3410 Boot Device Driver Missing

Hi,

Thank you very much for the quick answer!!!  I assumed that might be the case. I actually tried a newer version from July 30 2015 but it didn't fix it:

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-W-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-W540/downloads/DS104376

I'd be fine with the missing driver but I suspect my USB 3.0 ports may be running at 2.0 speeds. If I had a way to verify that they're truly acting like USB 3.0 ports, I can ignore the missing driver. Anyone know of a way to test just in case?

Thanks,

Doug

Hi Doug,

The TUSB3410 is an RS232/IrDA Serial-to-USB Converter.  Don't think it's necessarily USB 3.0 related.

http://www.ti.com/product/TUSB3410

[edit] Rats!  Copy and paste missed the full part number.  Not sure what it is. Still worth running TVSU (below) to see what it finds.

It's probably used to connect some internal device in your laptop to the internal USB hub(s).  Or maybe it's external.  Do you have anything plugged in when you see this?  Sorry, I'm not familiar with your laptop :(

Have you tried installing and running ThinkVantage System Update to see if it picks up that driver for you?

Re: W540 - TUSB3410 Boot Device Driver Missing

Hi,

It would have been helpful if I told you more about my laptop. Sorry. No, nothing connected at all (just the power supply and ethernet cable).

I do run System Update relgiously but no luck there.

Doing some research, this is definitely a USB port issue:

1. I see that TI makes the chip and it's used for USB 3.0 hubs on various devicies including the hub for the W540.

2. Plugging in a USB 3.0 thumb drive, Windows 10 complains that it could run faster if connected as USB 3.0. No issues plugging the same thing into my desktop PC with USB 3.0 ports.

3. I tried installing USBView but the Windows SDK doesn't seem to include it..

Thanks,

Doug

Re: W540 - TUSB3410 Boot Device Driver Missing

Hi,

Well, the problem seems to have been resolved. I installed the following 5 drivers which in theory should have nothing to do with the issue but seems to have fixed it nontheless:

Intel Wireless LAN (11abgn, 11bgn, 11ac) for Windows 10 (32-bit, 64-bit), 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad

Intel Bluetooth Software for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad

Intel Management Engine Firmware 9.1 for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit), 8 (64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad T440p, T540p, W540, W541

Intel Management Engine 11.0 Software for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit), 8 (64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad

Intel Collaborative Processor Performance Control (CPPC) Driver for Windows 10 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad

Unfortunately I lacked the patience to figure out exactly which one fixed the problem but it's one of them (or a combo of them).

Thanks again for all your help!

Doug
