W540 TouchPad scrolling targets wrong windows and areas

2014-06-19, 22:12 PM

Just bought my first ever ThinkPad and the touchpad will probably make me return it.

The problem seems to be that the driver can't figure out the current target to scroll.

If there's just one window open with one scrollable area in it, then it works just fine. At least the two finger scrolling.

But as soon as there's more than one scrollable area the scrolling gets messed up.

Switching around between different windows sometimes actually causes it to scroll stuff in an underlying window.

The mouse might be positioned over one area but scrolling makes a different area to be scrolled. And if the scrollable area that happens to be the TouchPads target (not the one under the cursor!) is disabled then scrolling wont work anywhere.

Imagine the impact of this behavior in a development environment with loads of scrollable panes and panels...it's impossible to use this machine.

So it's clearly a driver issue, any suggestions, upcoming driver release or should I just send the machine back?

Here's the config...

OS: Windows 7 Service Pack 1

Device: ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device

Driver Node Strong Name: oem44.inf:IBMMfg.NTamd64:LENOVO_GROUP17_InterTouch_Inst:18.0.7.40:*len0034

I also have this problem and it makes me hate my computer and will probably return it if they can't produce a fix for this.

It is obviously an issue with the Synaptec drivers as the scroll wheel of an external mouse works perfectly. Synaptec tells me to go through Lenovo and I can't get in contact with Lenovo.

Horrible issue on a really expensive laptop.

Try this workaround:

Grab AltDrag, go to it's configuration, and check Scroll inactive windows (and maybe MDI support).

Thanks for your response! Sadly, AltDrag didn't solve the problem.

Currently running UltraNav driver v.18.0.7.103. Tried updating and downgrading almost every driver without any success.

Windows 7 Professional, SP1, 64bit.

Did you try the really old 16.x driver versions too? Not sure if they'll even install on the new hardware.

Yup, tried installing the 16.3.7.3 amongst others but it just says it can't find the Synaptec device and quits.

And Windows is up to date of course.

Yeah I'm not sure. Maybe raise a case with phone warranty?

Trying out a full factory recovery and if that doesn't help I guess it's back to Mac. Not fun but it works.

Again, thanks for your time!
