Re: W540 Wish List

I've got a T60p, and it works great, but it's really time to upgrade, if an upgrade is meaningful.  For those of us who mostly use their laptops at their desk, what about this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/190936478557?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D190936478557%26_rdc%3D1

and an external monitor, and then "tolerate" the W540 the other 25% of the time?

@StevenD

The problem with that external keyboard is, you can't swap the Ctrl and Fn key like you can on the laptop.(bios)

I ended up buying one of these: (track point built in)

"Home, End, Insert and Delete are now positioned in order from left to right as they all address cursor position. Page Up/Down are positioned near the arrow keys so navigational controls are fully grouped. We have seen end-users comfortably adjust to these changes in less than an hour. "

Indeed, i could easily adapt to relocated Ins/Delete. But...
The classic cluster Home/End+PgUp/PgDn is fundamental to navigate vertically in long docs, HTML pages, code etc. It belongs together in the 2x2 island.

"to determine if and how we would make the changes to our keyboard in 2012, we embarked on one of the most in-depth keyboard studies ever conducted for ThinkPad. We did 350 hours of user testing with people in four countries. With each participant, we conducted 90- to 120-minute one-on-one interviews with hands-on use of different keyboard conditions to understand the latest about keyboard use and design preferences."

What was the sample population? Where there heavy coders, book/manual/tech writers? How about layout editors, scholars, engineers, secretaries, artists?

I respect this try. One must experiment and take risks. And accept failures - learning from them.

However, this is not about conserving the 20-yr. TP 'religious KB tradition'. Is about keeping that 2x3 cluster as it is on any normal KB since decades. And not going for an OEM chiclet just because it's cheaper (standard on all machines, just check Dell et al.), while condescending to your loyal users about magical benefits from what seems a cost and functionality reduction. So much study to change a keyboard which everyone said was the best in the market!! i just dont get it!!

seriously why do you have to change all these things that made thinkapds special ??

Now the only reason i would buy a thinkpad is the trackpoint - and guess what, i am sure you will remove that in next models?? but anyway i cannot use it without dedicated buttons

Why would anyone buy a thinkpad?? what more does it have to offer if you make it as all the other models??

And something important - Who needs all these different models?? How can you support all these different models - if there is anything that you should be taught by apple is that you should have a limited number of products well supported with modularity and same parts.  That is simply one of the most important reasons iphones dominated over htc phones. Are these marketing principles so hard to understand??

The W520 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080)  has 270 NITS. Another step backward?
