this same message has been said about the W520 and W530 mSATA system, and i have been using mSATA as the main hdd in these machines for 1 year now, no drama.

Re: W540 -- mSATA as boot disk?

The W540 Users Guide finally answers my question about the M.2 format (SATA or PCIE).

"Message: 2102: Detection error on HDD2 (M.2 SATA).

Solution: The M.2 SATA device is not working. Have the M.2 SATA device serviced."

Still doesn't answer the question of size since there are many different size M.2 cards.

Does anyone know if you have to buy the Lenovo card with the machine just to get the adapter to plug-in the M.2 card?  How was it setup on the W530?  What size card went into the W530? (I'm assuming that was a SATA version of M.2 as well)

The W530 does not use M.2 it uses the older mSATA.

Lenovo Australia has the W540 now:

If I order the TOP model that comes with RAID enabled, can I use RAID between the mSata and Internal 2.5" bay?

mSata = 256GB SSD

2.5" = 256GB SSD

I would than add a 1TB 7200 2.5" drive via the bay adapter. (as a 3rd drive, non RAID for data only)

Is this possible?    I'm probably asking for trouble messing with RAID on the boot drives but curious either way.

What if I don't want to use RAID?  Say I decide to boot off the mSATA and put the 1TB 7200 2.5" drive in the internal port. (leaving the drive bay empty)   Can I do this on a RAID spec W540?  (or is it important to buy the non-RAID model?)

I found this thread about using mSata as a boot drive, but doesn't talk about RAID option.

Interesting to note that on the Australian site, no option for any M.2 drive is offered.....

Did you get an answer to your questions? I'm trying to figure out the possiblity of using the M.2 slot for higher size SSD as well. Thanks

As yet, no. Still no answer as to physical size constraints or other properties of W540 M.2 slot. Hoping someone will come forth with this info, now that some of these machines seem to be shipping.

Thank you , Fleche.  How about thickness, while you are measuring?
