W540 stuck on Lenovo Logo

2019-10-02, 19:10 PM

My W540 (type BG) won't boot, and won't go into Bios

F1: Entering Setup - just hangs

F11: Launching the Recovery Utility - just hangs

F10: Entering Lenovo Diagnostics - just hangs

F<anything else> - no effect

WIN +B,R,Esc - no effect

Fn + B,R,Esc - no effect

I've tried different hard drives, removing the battery, clearing the CMOS (remove battery), holding the Power Button for 30 seconds after holding power for 1 sec 10 times, removing CD, ram (using 1, 2,4 modules - 0 modules gives no RAM beep codes). I tried creating a BIOS update Boot CD from LENOVO BIOS update but this won't boot.

My laptop did reboot earlier 2 twice, once when resetting RAM, and once when removing CD.

Third time it's stuck.

I haven't got my Serial number any more - supposed to be stored in BIOS but I can't read it.

I can read the 2 BIOS chips with a EEPROM programmer, and if I new the Serial Number, perhaps I could get proper BIOS bin files to reflash the BIOS and try that.

Is there some way to determine what the Serial Number is from a BIOS dump of the 2 BIOS chips?

The last BIOS update I used was gnu34us.

Georg

Hello and welcome,

I can't help with your stated issue, but IIRC the S/N is under the battery.  Seems odd that it would go missing from there.

There are regulatory labels under the battery, which are all readable, non of which resemble a serial number, and nothing remotely close to the Lenovo Thinkpad S/N 78-12XXX suggested on the web site for thinkpads. My W540 was purchased in late 2014, so perhaps the S/N placement has changed from where you get your info from.

I don't have one so I can only go by the UG, page 9.  But if it isn't there, it isn't there ... :(

[edit to add] I don't know if you mean to say "78-12XXX" literally, perhaps with the XXX replaced - but my ThinkPad S/Ns all start with two letters, not numbers.

Mine doesn't have that label there. It was elsewhere, but has worn down so that it isn't readable. The S/N is in the BIOS, so by doing a BIOS dump, (with a Flash programmer), one should be able to read the BIOS from the bin file. I tried using the UEFITool to read the dump, but I haven't been able to figure out where it is with that tool.

I thought someone in the Lenovo community might know how to do that. But it's pretty technical and beyond most people's understanding of computers.

I was able to finally rebuild a new bios from the old one and a download of a newer version, flash it on the motherboard chips with a SPI programmer, and my computer is now working again.

With the serial number now known, I searched the bios dump again but could not find it - perhaps it's encrypted in the BIOS.

Serial number isn't in the BIOS, which is why you cannot find it there

HI GorgeGeorg

Can you explain how you did this?

I've exactly the same behaviour, my W540 is stuck on "ThinkPad" logo and "a product of Lenovo" and acts similar to yours.

Would be of great help, if I can follow your guidelines

Best

Jimmy

My W540 died with the same issue last year.  I was working on it in the morning, went for lunch and it had died when I came back.

I spent weeks looking for an answer - same issues as listed here, I've done pretty much all the tests I know and found on the site and every now and again I have another look to see if anything else has thrown up a possible solution.  I've done pretty much every test imaginable - except the bounce test onto concrete from 30 feet, but that one is getting close.

The laptop was expensive, a factory custom build bought 5 years ago so out of warranty (surprise), but it was bought to run virtual workloads so has 32GB and a very good spec and I really want to get it running again, worried it may be the motherboard and no idea where to get it tested or replaced in the UK, especially under the current lockdown state.
