W540 - which docking station?

2014-06-02, 11:43 AM

Hello everybody,

I'm a W540 user since 1 month (received the workstation from my company).

I share with you some of the perplexities regarding some hardware features (trackpad, missing leds.... I add odd hardware assembling around power button).

The main question of my topic is... What is the correct docking station / port replicator to choose??

- Reading the website, it seems that the model to choose is "ThinkPad Ultra Dock 170W (40A20170XX)" (In my case, 40A20170EU). It seems logic, given that my laptop has a 170W charger.

By tghe way, it seems to be impossible to find this docking sttaion in Europe! i only find the 40A20170US (USA version).

- The other solution may be the "ThinkPad Ultra Dock 135W (40A20135XX)" (Again, in my case, 40A20135EU).

Do a 135 charger supply enough juice to the thirsty workstation? I don't want to rely on an under-dimensioned charger!

What's your opinins on this point?

It seems strange that Lenovo doesn't provide the 170W version of the dock to all European customers!

Another question: may someone confirm me that both ThinkPad Ultra Docks (40A20135EU and 40A20170EU) are supplied with the new, rectangular-socket-type, charger

Thanks in advance to everybody!

BR,

Matteo

I bought the 135W version. I use it with 170W power adapter that came with the laptop, works fine. I keep the 170W adapterplugged in at all times, and if I need to take an adapter elsewhere, I take the 135W version, since it's lighter and takes less space. Seems to be a reasonable compromise.

I am using the Pro Dock

Came with 135W Version

I also swap the 135W with 170W power adaptor

I do have a startup issues from time to time.. My solution is to remove the W540 from the docking once, it always starts OK on 2nd time..no clue why :(

Hello Zalbard and Kob55,

this is one of the ideas I had... using the 135W as everyday charger and leaving the 170W attached to the docking station.

Now, my question... do you notice any difference while the laptop is attached to 135W or 170W chargers? Or just a slower recharge time?

Thanks in advance...

Hi all

I haven't noticed any difference in charge time or performance.

The only difference I found are the size and weight of the charges...

Maybe my requirements are not as high as other users

My main use is SolidEdge & AutoCAD CAD applications

When in the office, I am using a Dell U2412M monitor plugged into the docking

Again, my biggest issue is to startup the W540 when in the docking.

This problem repeats with both chargers

It's  January 2020.... and I have the same issue.  My W540 or my other, a W541 also often hang on start up, and just sits there like a dumb black box.  No HD activity light to tell you something is reading.  Checked the boot log, and very difficult to tell what is happening. No help from Lenovo.... seems to be a known issue... claims that new BIOS solved the issue..... NOT SO.
