W540 will not load from SSD, need help

2014-06-12, 6:49 AM

I just bought a W540 (windows 8) and extra SSD to replace the original HD in W540.

I have created a recovery image in windows 8 to my 16G USB flash and disabled intel rapid storage.

I put the new 512G Crucial MX100 SSD into the machine, and use USB flash drive to reset the laptop.

After the reset process was finished, I took out the USB flash drive, but the laptop will not load windows from my SSD, and the laptop did detect my SSD.

I am wondering if I did something wrong? I took out the SSD and put it in to my desktop, and I did see files were written into the SSD, but W540 will not load it,

Hello ronan.

When you have your new SSD in the machine, what devices do you see listed in Boot Devices?

If you used the recovery media to re-image your new drive, then it should be UEFI partitioned,

and thus you need to enable UEFI boot, either by making it UEFI only or Both in BIOS, and on

top of your boot order should be the Windows Boot Loader.

Cheers.

From BIOS it shows:

Boot priority Order:

1. Windows Boot Manager

2. USB CD

3. USB FDD

4. ATAPI CD0 MAT**bleep**ADVD

5.ATA HDD0, Crucial_CT512MX100SSD1

6. ATA HDD1

7. ATA HDD2

8. USB HDD

9. PCI Lan

I have set:

IEFI/Legacy Boot to UEFI only.

secure Boot On

Intel Rapid Start Technology Disabled

Try setting Secure Boot to OFF, it can always be activated later.

I disable the Security Boost, and Set UEFI/Legacy boot to UEFI only with CSM support No.

Strange, where exactly does the boot process hang / fail? Do you get the Windows logo up on the screen?

it does not load to windows at all.

When I start the laptop, it shows Lenovo initializing screen, then the system hands there for a while and bring me to the bule menu, the blue menu has " Boot Menu" and "App Meun" tabs. unde the "Boot Menu", it has

Windows Boot Manager

ATAPI CD0

ATA HDD0: Crucial. CTS512MX100SSD1

PCI Lan

Just a hunch, but try setting your UEFI/Legacy boot to Both and Legacy first in the UEFI/Legacy Boot Priority.

The reason for your machine not booting might be found here:

Windows 8 Recovery Fails to Install on New Blank SSD

It does not give any info if the Recovery Media actually formats the drive in GPT mode, which is required for UEFI boot, in which case you might have to re-format your new SSD and re-install it with your recovery USB, which you're probably required to boot in UEFI mode as well. I have only installed Windows 8 in UEFI mode with an original retail DVD, and to achieve that I had to boot the DVD in UEFI mode.

HOW TO: Use the Diskpart.efi Utility to Create a GUID Partition Table Partition on a Raw Disk in Windows
