Re: W541 - Replace SSD and RAM

When you need a drive caddy to add additional space check out NewmodeUS. I've gotten a couple caddies for Lenovo & Dell laptops. Fit & finish is excellent and less expensive than buying from the mfgr.

I can't see a benefit in the Samsung 850 Pro. I have one at 250Gb and a 500Gb EVO (boot and data). Performance benchmarks are almost identical & more often than not the EVO is faster. And the EVO is always less expensive. Just looking for some insight.

If you can open a catsup bottle you probably have the skills to change memory and ssd. Other components are more touchy but these are designed to easily replaceable.

Microprocessor = CPU?

And "FRU service is generally meant for service technicians" means I cannot replace myself and need to send back to Lenovo for upgrade?

The informations you provided is useful, thanks

Microprocessor = CPU.

FRUs are still replaceable, but will in principle void your warranty if you do it yourself.

W520: 2960XM, Q2000M @ 1091/1380, 32GB RAM, 500GB&750GB HDD & 500GB SSD, FHD&MB168B+
X61T: L7500, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, XGA screen, Ultrabase
W550s: 5600U, K620M at 1164/1281, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 3K touchscreen
X200s: SL9400, 6GB RAM, 64GB SD card, WXGA+ screen

Yes, that make sense. If I don't wanna void the warranty, can I let Lenovo to do that?

And, will I be able to replace with any CPU?

In the Lenovo product config page, I have only few options:

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/w-series/w541/

  • Intel Core i7-4710MQ Processor
  • Intel Core i7-4810MQ Processor
  • Intel Core i7-4910MQ Processor
  • Intel Core i7-4940MX Processor Extreme Edition

But it is a QM87 chipset, according to http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/QM87.html

i7-4930MX is supported in this chipset.  And more options

My question is, when I am doing the upgrade (choosing CPU), do I refer to lenovo page or the CPU-upgrade page?

Hi,

@GatsbyGlen - Which RAM did you install in your machine?

DDR3L 1866 (PC3L 14900)

OR

DDR3L 1600 (PC3L 12800),

as you said there was a review comment from a newegg user that the higher clocked RAM didnot work with W541.

Thanks,

Srik

I went with 12800. The following product specifically,
