W700 Stuck on 1st boot screen

2013-03-01, 23:46 PM
Hello all,

I`m new to the community and am hoping some kind stranger may be able to help me out.
I received a freshly refurbished ThinkPad w700 about a week ago and, regrettably, the seller forgot the battery. I contacted them and they shipped one out with no fuss. While waiting for the battery to arrive, I figured I`d go about transferring my files and installing my various applications. About 2 hours in, the whole thing locks up and I`m forced to hold down the power button and force shutdown. Now when i turn it on it stays at the fist screen (where it prompts you to push the thinkvantage button and interrupt normal startup) indefinitely. If i push the thinkvantage button, the text simply disappears and it stays there. Escape, takes me to a DOS screen with the system specs but stays there. F12, says it`s preparing the boot device list and stays there. Even with the new, freshly charged battery.

Is it possible that i`ve just drained the motherboard battery? Or is this likely something i should simply warranty out?

Check out your Harddisk: it reads as if the HDD is corrupted.

Try to boot from CD/DVD, i.e. with a Windows or Linux install disk. You could also remove the hard drive, just in case it's faulty and halts the booting process.

The strange thing to me is that it wont even pull up the boot devices. It just stays at the dialogue stating that it's doing so. Tried linux and win7 on both cd and flash drive. Same result... I suspected it may be the hard drive. Just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be as simple as replacing the CMOS battery before i went about cracking this thing open. It's warrantied for three years so I may just end up swapping it.
