W700 - keyboard flex / hollow sounds

2009-05-15, 10:51 AM

I just received my W700 today, there's a small amount of flex particularly around the P key - and keys in that local area make a very hollow sound when pressed.  Is that normal?  Has anyone had the same problem and then got it resolved?

hi,

I got my W700 yesterday and the keyboard is a bit soft on the sides, as in if you press the S button all the others around it also move slightly. I believe this is due to the roll-cage which is limited to the centre of the machine, so even if its a bit annoying I assume its normal. Im already getting use to it. Hope this helped

It is, unfortunately, the new normal. However IMO that is no excuse for the flexy, squishy, uneven typing experience these mesh keyboards exhibit. I had mine (W700) replaced shortly after discovering the issue and learned that there are other models which do not exhibit the flex because they have a solid back. Search these threads for the whole saga and what to do about it.

Yes I think I'll ask about a replacement on Monday, it's very specifically the P,-,=,[ cluster of keys, they're not actually bottoming out of course, but the noise from those honestly sounds like that - very loud, very hollow.  It's quite distracting when I'm typing and the tone changes from quiet noises to *KLUNK* any time P is hit.

wheadley you mean you changed model as you had it replaced with another series of laptop ?

and what do you mean with "what to do about it", I searched the thread but found little info. The only solution would be to get a different model right ?

I mean the keyboard model. I love my W700 now that it has a different keyboard-- back to the normal Thinkpad goodness. If you search this forum for keyboard issues you will quickly find a long thread that details everything. Basically the new keyboards are lighter weight and use a mesh backing that flexes while the older keyboard models, which are in every other way the same, used a solid metal back. So when that style is placed into a uniframed notebook like a W700 or W500 the keys flex and thunk and deliver an uneven and to some, annoying typing experience. Replacing that newer model keyboard with a older model solid-backed version definitively solves this problem. Lenovo claims to have strenghtened the mesh-backed keyboard in updated notebooks so this may not even be an issue for people buying them now. I bought mine last November and back then it was a huge issue.

I see, thanks for the reply. I will look for the thread, but I think I will stick with the flexy one for now as I really can't afford to send it away and wait for the replacement...and I don't use the keyboard that much for tiping. Thanks again

UPDATE_I started a procedure to replace the keyboard (ive changed my mind, its just too annoying to have that softness and loudness for most of the buttons) this morning with IBM uk. I will keep you updated on how this goes.

Do they send new parts out to customers or do you have to return the machine for a keyboard change?

UPDATE 2_An IBM engineer is supposed to come on wednsday at my place and replace the keyboard. So far I am very impressed with IBM and Lenovo customer service. Quality and speed make it the best I have ever experienced.

I will update when I get the new keyboard on wednsday.
