I just got W700, wonderful laptop yet the keyboard is a huge disappointment, especially when you pay over 2K.

Call the 800 number and you should end up with IBM service in Atlanta, GA. Politely tell them the keyboard is unacceptable due to the flex. Then politely request the 42T3143 keyboard. They will check if it's in stock. Tell them you'll do the swap yourself. Next day you'll have the new keyboard and a shipping label to return the old one (same box).

I have followed this procedure 3 times with 3 different W500s during this year. Hope this helps. The actual swap is easy... 5 screws. When you remove the old keyboard,  note the keyboard plug orientation on the motherboard.

Wendel,

I followed your directions, and have recieved a new, old-style keyboards.

I am typing this on my W700, and even though I have not yet put in the screws and tightened the keyboard, the quality of the replacement keyboard that you recommended is evident.

This has resolved the "cheap" feeling of my high-end lenovo laptop.

If anyone else is looking for a resolution to keyboard flex on a thinkpad w700 or a W500 this is the solution.  RESOLVED !

I just called Lenovo support and the refused to accept any part numbers for a non-W500 keyboard as a replacement. The rep ordered the number that supercedes what I have- let's hope it's better!

Sadly be prepared to call again and return what they send. I hope you're reaching the IBM support center in Atlanta, GA USA. Maybe the next rep will be okay... I did have the same problem the first time and had to return it. However calling with a specific FRU and acting like you know what you're doing (politely, of course) seems to work. Good luck.

I just received the replacement keyboard the rep chose for me. It's a 42T3209 (Alps) with a solid back; the feel is a bit different than the lightweight Chicony it replaces but I'm completely satisfied. Lenovo has yet again demonstrated to me that they're the only REAL laptop maker out there.
