What is the procedure to expand laptop memory

2020-09-14, 20:58 PM

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 which I need to expand to 64G RAM.

What is the procedure to do that?
I have extended warranty.

I recommend you purchase the memory from Crucial. It will be a LOT cheaper than factory direct.

As far as replacing the memory, it depends on your skill level. Warranty coverage is not an "upgrade warranty", meaning if you want to upgrade your memory it will not cover the labor needed to accomplish it. On the same note, if you don't have Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) and you damage something it will also NOT BE covered under the warranty. With that said, here are some videos that can help you in determining if the process is right for you. If it is not, there are several places available that will install (for a fee) the memory modules for you. Again, I always recommend you buy your memory from Crucial or get Crucial branded memory from an authorized reseller.

ETA: Also, in this same section you will find the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual) that will detail all the steps needed to get to and/or remove/replace a particular component/subsystem on the device in question.
