When do we finally get a good screen? (P50 4K)

2016-02-23, 10:45 AM

Just got my P50. It is quite a nice machine, but the screen is just pathetic.

1) How much space do you waist on the screensize compared to the size of the lid. I feel like back in 1994 when I had a siemens notebook with a lid size of something like 13 inch and screen size of 9 inch.

2) Contrast and  viewing angles. I have a LG 21" screen, at least 10 years old. That has about the same contrast and quality. It is really bad. one inch movement of your body and colors change. The contrast is just horrible.

Really hard to use, using windows 10 with 175 scalaing.

Not talking about the pathetic support of scaling on windows. Many windows/fonts look so wrong.

I have a surface pro 4, and the screen is really amazing, so it is possible on a slim device to have a decent screen.

I have not seen the HD display, but it can not be much worse and you do not have the scaling issues.

And as always from lenovo, there does not seem to be one machine that is build perfectly, the palm rest is bended in the area of the finger print reader. (of course I have the speaker cracking sound)

The speed I have to say is amazing, but I think that credit goes rather to intel.

Potentially addressing your scaling and fonts looking "wrong" or blurry complaint, the standard resolution is to right-click on the program shortcut for each program for which fonts/scaling appears incorrect, select Properties, select the Compatibility tab, and then check the "disable display scaling on high DPI settings" box, and OK your way back.  Close the program and re-launch.

This solution has worked for me starting with Win8 when the problem really first started.  I know it's a pain, but it's a one-time quick process and then everything looks crystal clear again like with Win7, even at high desktop resolutions and high Windows scaling percentages.

Thanks so much. At least something got better. I downloaded the windows 10 DPI Fix app. So you can change the scaling behavior from window 10 back to windows 8.1

At least the fonts look sharper now.

Ehh... Just to be completely sure, what screen did you receive? The 4K screen is advertised as having a 1000:1 contrast ratio and 178 degrees U/D/L/R viewing angle. The Sharp part number is LQ156D1JW05. The "little brother" is LQ156D1JW04 and is the sRGB variant of this display, which receives raving reviews: See for example http://www.notebookcheck.net/Schenker-W505-Clevo-P751ZM-Notebook-Review.147149.0.html

To quote:

"The viewing angles are good, which is typical for an IPS display. There will only be deviations from extreme angles from above or below, which are rare in practice. Another word on the resolution: If you reduce it to 1920x1080 for a better performance, you do not have to live with a blurry picture. Lower resolutions appear pretty sharp."

Take a look at the viewing angle photos. As I'm awaiting a P50 with 4K panel, I'd like to hear your honest opinion. Does the viewing angles of the P50 4K display look similar to those of the other laptop in the review?

Something just doesn't add up here, if not.

I checked the part number: 00NY498, I think it is the sharp display.

What is bothering me is the really bad contrast when it comes to black and white. I do a lot of coding.

In general it is quite hard to read because black is more grey than black.

In regards to viewing angles, I think it keeps the colors quite well, but:

When you center your head in front with normal distance, the display gets already darker at the left and right side (about 0.5 inch), when you move one inch to the right, the right side is brightens up.

Not that you could not live with it, but for a machine that costs > 4000 USD, I think it is bad.

My surface pro 4 has a much better screen, and I am not even comparing it to an apple ipad pro is even a bit better than the surface.

For more than >4000 USD it is insane. If it is any help, I'm in the same boat :)

Yes, the 00NY498 is the only FRU part number for the 4K display.

The contrast should however be indestinguishable from the Surface 4 Pro, which is in the same contrast range (about 1100:1). Black shouldn't look gray, unless the display is at full brightess, which should be blindingly bright indoors. To, me it sounds like some sort of software is clipping the color information for all color primaries, resulting in what looks like a washed-out display with poor contrast. Could it be the calibration software that applies some sort of unsuitable color profile?

Another user on this forum mentioned that the display was darker than his much older Dell Lattitude E6502 screen, which isn't supposed to be the case.

Have you tried with some sort of Ubuntu Live USB stick, to see if the display becomes different regarding contrast, etc.?

I suppose you don't by any change have a real colorimeter to measure color/light output? Like a Spyder, DTP94, etc.?

s, Re: When do we finally get a good screen? (P50 4K)

In regards to brightnes, my W530 Full HD is a tad brighter, whites are cleaner.

As I said, I can live with it, since 90% of the time I am using two 4K 32" monitors. But still, I expected much more, oh well ...

I agree, one should expect much more.

According to this review: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-W530-N1K43GE-Notebook.80062.0.html

The W530 FHD display should not be as bright as the Sharp display. Considering that even a difference of 50 cd/m2 can be hard to notice when comparing two bright displays, I think something is not working as intended.

I will inspect my 4K display when I receive the laptop, using a DTP94. Then we can hopefully try to pinpoint what is wrong.

If you display an all black image on the W530 and P50, which display shows the "blackest" image, and how would large would you describe the difference to be?

The P50 has a better black. The W530 has more bleeding.

I improved the subjective contrast by lowering the gamma value from 1 to 0.7

So now the black font look a bit clearer to me.

I think the colors overall are definitely nicer on the P50. The background light seems to be stronger on the W530.
