Re: When do we finally get a good screen? (P50 4K)

2017-01-14, 14:37 PM

I think the main problem with the low brighness on the 4K panel is actually the horrible viewing angels. Even on a 15" monitor looking from far away, their is a noticable brightness drop from the middle of the screen towards the edges.

I've scheduled a return for my P50 now. Great laptop in most cases, but the screen just isn't good enough. To make things worse, comming from a MacBook Pro before, which has one of the best panels in the business, the difference is really noticable.

I am actually quite mad at Lenovo for this, because I believe the screwed their customers but fitting crap panels to a laptop that is best of best in everything else. There is simply no excuse for this.

Anyone has tried to swap the 4K Acer V15 Nitro screen LQ156D1JW02D ? According review it does not have the terrible low PWM frequency issue (1000Hz on brigthness 10% and below) and other parameters like contrast ratio, color space coverage and viewing angles brightness are also better.

Considering the low brightness on the P50 display, when would you ever want to run it at 10%? While taking a stroll in outer space? :D

It means the acceptable PWM frequency 1000 Hz is used for 0% to 10% range while from 10% to 100% it is much higher while the crappy P50 display use the low 200 Hz frequency in the whole brightness range.

If I recall correctly, the 4K screen of the P50 uses PWM only for about 50% brightness and below but could remember wrong here?

Well, I'm here on earth :smileyvery-happy: and find that anything over 25% brightness is too bright for me.  I have the FHD, not the 4K screen, which I know is different, but I'm always amazed at how many people want to stare at a 100% bright screen all day.  No way could I do that.  Fortunately, I got a screen with no PWM problem.

And I am a amazed how someone can work with anything less than 100% considering the very low brightness of the P50 screen :D

I guess you mean that you use an external screen then as the FHD has PWM also if I am  not remembering wrong?

Of course, all these problems could have been avoided if Lenovo only spent a few cents more buying quality LCD panels for laptops costing more than $3000 so we wouldn't have PWM and just select the brightness we want.

I use only the P50 screen -- no external monitor.  My P50 has the LG LP156WF6-SPK3 screen.  P50 FHD models can have any of several different screens installed.  Again, I just got lucky.  Or Lenovo did.  Because I would have returned the machine if it had any PWM problem.  Obviously, PWM would have been a real problem for me running at 25% brightness.

I have not seen a P50 4K screen.  It is supposed to be brighter than the FHD, no?  And yet I think my FHD is bright and beautiful at 25%.  I run my old W500 at about 60% brightness.

Everyone is different!

25% should be below 100 nits, I find it hard to imaging how anyone could consider that as bright. That said, I respect your opinion of course.

What about the graininess on the 4K screen, what do you think of that? I feel that, even knowing what to expect, it is really grainy to the point where it is causing som problems. This could be releated to the really poor viewing angels.

Suprisingly enough, it seems the competition doesnt really have any better screens, like the ZBook G3 which also seem to have dim screen with poor viewing angels, even with the dream display. Does workstation users only care about performance and not about the display?
