Re: When do we finally get a good screen? (P50 4K)

2017-02-02, 22:08 PM

Just to give a comparission here. I just received my Alienware 17 R4 with a built in LCD panel strictly aimed at gaming. This is a matte 1440p TN panel running at 120 hz strictly entirely focused on being a fast gaming screen. If I had to choose between this panel (typing on it now) and the 4K in my P50, I would without any doubt choose the one in the Alienware. And yes, this is the panel with the famous striping problem so its not like we are talking about a great screen here for productivity use).

(Anyone that really needs a color correct screen might still go for the P50 4K though, I am not one of those so exact colors are not much worth to me if the rest of the panel suck and it kind of does in the P50 compared with how it should be on a laptop in this pricerange)

thanks for sharing, and take care of your back. those Alienware 17 are really heavy!

Alienware 15 weights= P70's weight+0.1 lb

Alienware 17 weights= P310's weight?

I honestly dont know what Alienware is doing with the extra weight.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious :D And no, I don't plan to lug around the AW17 so it's more of a "portable desktop" than anything.

The point of my post was to clearly show that even a screen that isn't intended for productivity use still, to me, is favorable compared to the one in the P50. That shouldn't be the case for a laptop in this price range, and is also a big letdown of what in most other regards is a really good laptop. If Lenovo decides to put in a better panel in the P51, or manage to slim down the P71 compare to the previous one (just getting rid of the ancient optical drive would probably do it although some people may still use them) I would probably buy one right off. Even considered buying a P70 now instead of a P50, but getting a big an heavy laptop just because Lenovo cant put in a good screen in the P50 just feels wrong.

The answer is simple, cooling the GTX1080 beast :D

Just to put things into perspective, its not like the 4K screen suck or anything, just that it feels like it is not up to par with the rest of the quality of the P50. If this panel had been in a  1000 dollar laptop, no problem, but in this pricerange, it should be better. At least that is my feeling, and I think others agree with me (while others might not).

Any hopes of the Thinkpad P51 getting better screens than the P50? Really miss it, but the really bad 4K screen with lots of graininess, bad viewing angles and low brightness forced me to return it :(

Has anyone successfully installed the P51 4K LCD (AUO B156ZAN02.1) into the P50?

Re: When do we finally get a good screen? (P50 4K)

Just picked up a P51 to see if Lenovo had gotten their act together regarding the 4K screen.

The good news is yes, they have, the 4K screen on the P51 (B156ZAN0 in my case) is much better than the lcd in the P50. No graining, acceptable viewing angles etc. The bad news is that so far it is also still quite dim. Even on highest brightness, whites appear light grey simply because there just isn't enough brightness. It should be noted that I am comparing it to really good screens like Apples and the XPS15, but it is still amazing that Lenovo just can't put in a good screen in a top spec machine. If a crappy brand like Dell can do it, why not Lenovo?

Edit:

Just to avoid any confusion, the P51 screen is MUCH better than the one in the P50, even though there is still room for improvement. It should be noted that I like my screens bright and with "pop" in them. Not sure what is needed to messure screen brightness, as I don't do any color work etc, investing in a professional calibration device just isn't reasonable.

Edit 2:

Unfortunately, my LCD panel seem to have horrible backlight bleed. It so bad that in the lower left bottom corner, it is even visible on a background that isnt all black or uniform. This seems to be related to pressure from the bezzels onto the panel, not sure if there is a fix for that? Have repaired multiple laptops myself in the past with the same problem...
